Job Summary

The Energy Engineer, PE I is responsible for applying standard engineering techniques to design, analyze, test, maintain, repair, or improve products, components, or assemblies. This role involves evaluating and optimizing energy consumption for commercial buildings and applicable systems.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Frequently interact with clients, contractors, and engineers to fulfill the essential duties and responsibilities of the position.
  2. Analyze, develop, and evaluate systems to improve energy efficiency and reduce costs.
  3. Design and draft blueprints, visit systems in the field, and manage projects to ensure successful implementation.
  4. Apply engineering techniques and analyses within the scope of the assignment to optimize energy consumption.
  5. Collect, compile, organize, and analyze utility consumption data and rates to identify opportunities for energy savings.
  6. Develop a comprehensive understanding of utility supply-side opportunities, procurement logistics, and energy efficiency rebate and incentive programs.
  7. Research utility rate changes and deregulated energy cost trends to inform energy-saving strategies.
  8. Conduct energy benchmarks using internal and external tools such as EPA Energy Star to measure energy performance.
  9. Review utility invoices for errors and work to resolve the errors with the utility.
  10. Create utility budgets to ensure accurate forecasting and planning.
  11. Collect, review, and analyze data from field surveys and utility data to identify opportunities for energy savings.
  12. Develop a thorough understanding of existing building and its MEP systems to identify areas for improvement.
  13. Identify and evaluate improvements for energy or cost reductions, and develop associated technical reports.
  14. Develop and implement Measurement and Verification (M&V) plans to ensure accurate tracking of energy savings.
  15. Coordinate with clients, utility representatives, energy analysts, engineers, construction managers, and commission agents during all project stages to ensure successful implementation.
  16. Review design documents, M&E specifications, and shop drawings of applicable metering systems to confirm all M&V requirements are met.
  17. Verify utility performance of facilities and validate savings.
  18. Review and analyze energy performance, including data collection, utility bill accounting, sub-metering data analysis, and utility cost analysis.
  19. Create, maintain, and distribute M&V dashboards and reports through multiple software platforms.
  20. Collect and evaluate energy, weather, and building automation data on a periodic basis to identify facility operational issues affecting energy consumption, comfort, and/or code compliance.
  21. Develop recommendations to address any identified operational issues and prepare reports for project stakeholders summarizing all discoveries.
  22. Develop engineering-based energy models to simulate existing and proposed operations of buildings or systems.
  23. Work collaboratively with team members to identify and evaluate scope of potential improvements.
  24. Develop life cycle cost analyses and other engineering economic analyses to inform energy-saving strategies.
  25. Develop supporting documentation on engineering calculations, methodologies, etc. as required.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering.
  • 3+ Years of Experience in a related field.
  • Registered Professional Engineer.
  • Experience with energy savings projects.
  • Experience with life cycle cost analyses.
  • Experience in analyzing utility data.
  • Basic knowledge of commercial HVAC systems.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and proficiency in other Microsoft applications.
Preferred Qualifications

We are looking for candidates with:

  • Experience with energy modeling software.
  • Experience with building automation systems.
  • Experience with energy efficiency programs.
  • Experience with data analytics tools such as Microsoft Power BI, Python, Tableau, Jupyter Notebook, or R.
  • CEM, CMVP, CEP, CEA, EEP, or BEP certifications through the Association of Energy Engineers or equivalent.
Travel Requirements

This role requires 10% travel to job sites/office locations.

Physical/Work Environment Requirements

This role involves prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer, climbing stairs, remaining in a stationary position, and repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
