Position Summary:

The Customs Logistics Specialist is responsible for providing Supply Chain and Logistics support for all products of Brothers International Food, LLC. This role oversees the customs and compliance processes to ensure the timely importation of goods, which includes the completion of Importer Security Filing (ISF), customs entry, assignment of Harmonized Tariff System (HTS) codes, self-filing of customs entries, and the audit/payment of all related duties, fees, and port charges. The position also assists the Logistics team in freight tendering, tracking and expediting inbound shipments, document review, and managing all examinations by U.S. government agencies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and execute Customs Entries submissions to ensure the prompt release of import shipments using the Descartes ABI system.
  • Classify imported items using U.S. HTS to ascertain the appropriate import duties based on the valuation of goods.
  • Assess whether shipments qualify for special or reduced tariffs.
  • Compile essential documentation, including cargo-control papers, customs invoices, and certificates of origin/analysis, ensuring accuracy before forwarding to the relevant parties.
  • Communicate with vendors to guarantee timely receipt of ISF information.
  • Update shipment statuses and incorporate relevant information within the corporate ERP system, including ISF submissions, container numbers, and Ocean Bill of Lading.
  • Manage customs correspondence post-entry and any related clearance details or information.
  • Monitor shipments as they progress through customs to ensure compliance at every stage, reporting any issues, delays, or customs holds to the shared logistics services group as necessary to resolve problems and minimize delays and service charges.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of all industry regulations and perform all customs duties.
  • Generate internal or external reports as required.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 2 or 4-year degree in a relevant field (international business, supply chain management, etc.) preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience in Customs/Trade Compliance.
  • Experience in the freight forwarding sector.
  • Proficiency in general office computer skills, including Microsoft Office products; ERP experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of CBP regulations, HTS, and commodity classification.
  • Familiarity with Import Trade Auxiliary Communications System (ITACS) and FDA examination procedures.
  • Fluency in the ACE/ABI system.
  • Understanding of INCOTERMS.
  • Current U.S. Customs Broker License with no pending restrictions preferred but not required.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Knowledge of various transportation modes, including air freight, LCL, FCL, as well as domestic trucking and rail movements.
  • Excellent analytical and conflict resolution skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • General knowledge of geography and international transactions related to the forwarding industry.
  • Detail-oriented with robust organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet various deadlines.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently.
