POSITION SUMMARY

The Clinical Staff Nurse is a highly skilled and experienced Registered Nurse (RN) dedicated to delivering exceptional nursing care and managing patient treatment. Reporting to the Director of the Intensive Care Unit, this role encompasses 12-hour accountability for organizing, planning, directing, coordinating, and providing high-quality, individualized patient and family-centered care based on the Watson Model of Care for a designated group of patients. This includes recognizing and addressing special needs and considerations related to age and population-specific awareness. The nurse is expected to fully engage in fulfilling the mission of MLK Community Healthcare, demonstrating behaviors aligned with the organization's core values and supporting its strategic goals and quality improvement initiatives.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Utilize the nursing process as a problem-solving framework, leveraging knowledge and experience to anticipate and meet patient and family needs.

2. Conduct focused nursing assessments to identify key areas for patient populations, recognizing subtle clinical changes and adjusting care plans accordingly. Ensure prioritization and organization of patient care.

3. Apply knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate care tailored to the needs of patients on the assigned unit, utilizing current literature and critical thinking for sound clinical decision-making.

4. Uphold the Hospital's Patient Satisfaction initiatives in all interactions with patients, families, and colleagues.

5. Establish and maintain therapeutic nurse-patient relationships throughout the healthcare continuum, respecting patient rights as integral to this relationship.

6. Communicate effectively using the SBAR method during all hand-off situations.

7. Document patient care accurately, including assessments, interdisciplinary plans of care, implementation, evaluation, and adherence to the Watson Model of Care and hospital policies.

8. Anticipate factors affecting patient comfort and modify interventions accordingly, empowering patients and families to participate actively in recovery.

9. Commit to addressing the learning needs of patients and families, utilizing appropriate resources to achieve positive outcomes.

10. Collaborate with Care Managers during patient stays and take an active role in coordinating interdisciplinary discharge planning.

11. Review patient orders and communicate changes in patient conditions to physicians and team members promptly.

12. Evaluate the effectiveness of nursing interventions and document outcomes in the interdisciplinary plan of care.

13. Utilize patient classification systems in accordance with established standards.

14. Demonstrate the ability to plan, supervise, instruct, and evaluate ancillary nursing personnel, ensuring evaluations are completed each shift.

15. Maintain a professional appearance in accordance with dress code policies and promote proper identification standards.

16. Ensure a safe and clean environment that meets regulatory standards, including Patient Safety Goals.

17. Participate in the implementation of the unit-specific Quality and Performance Improvement Plan, completing monitoring forms and reporting findings.

18. Assist with the orientation of new employees and the setup of equipment and patient rooms.

19. Participate in training for new employees on the Care Collaborative System and engage in integrated testing.

20. Provide basic hygiene and activities of daily living (ADLs) to patients.

21. Perform any other duties as assigned by the Nurse Manager.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

A. Education
• Bachelor of Science degree preferred; Associate in Nursing, Nursing Diploma, or equivalent considered. Internal candidates who have completed the MLKCH Versant Nurse Residency Program will be evaluated.

B. Qualifications/Experience
• Minimum of one year of clinical nursing experience required.
• Minimum of one year of Med/Surg/Telemetry nursing experience preferred, subject to regulatory guidelines and manager discretion.
• Current California Nursing license required.
• Basic EKG competence required.
• Certification in Progressive Critical Care Nursing and Medical/Surgical Nursing preferred.

C. Special Skills/Knowledge
• Bilingual skills preferred (Spanish).
• Basic computer skills required.
• Dysrhythmia Course certificate preferred.
• Experience with Electronic Medical Records preferred.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications required.
• Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) Blue Card required within 90 days of hire.
