General Statement of Duties

HOURLY RATE: $20.71/HR

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is responsible for providing essential life-saving support, transportation, and stabilization procedures, as well as emergency medical assistance at the Basic Level within the Emergency Services framework of the County.

This role entails responding to both emergency and non-emergency situations, delivering necessary medical care to individuals who are ill or injured, and facilitating their transport to medical facilities or appointments. Responsibilities include ensuring adherence to quality emergency patient care standards, verifying the availability of appropriate equipment and treatments, and exercising sound judgment in medical decision-making. The work environment may include exposure to various environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, noise, and potential hazards associated with emergency medical operations, including contact with biological materials. Compliance with OSHA regulations regarding bloodborne pathogens is mandatory.

Essential Duties and Tasks

- Operates emergency medical vehicles to respond to calls for assistance and transports patients as needed.
- Administers basic life support techniques and procedures based on patient evaluations.
- Collects patient medical and insurance information for documentation purposes.
- Completes necessary reports for emergency responses, including billing and legal accountability.
- Engages in ongoing training to enhance skills in medical procedures and ambulance operations; familiarizes with local road networks to optimize response times.
- Conducts inspections and tests on ambulances and emergency equipment, maintaining an inventory of supplies; ensures cleanliness and proper functioning of vehicles and equipment.
- Upholds cleanliness and performs minor maintenance on Emergency Medical Service facilities; participates in physical fitness activities.

- Extensive knowledge and proficiency in executing emergency medical procedures at the EMT basic level, in accordance with established protocols.
- Familiarity with emergency care equipment and supplies.

- Ability to recognize trauma and medical emergency signs to provide appropriate treatment.
- Competence in operating rescue equipment safely and efficiently.
- Capacity to interact effectively with a diverse population in various situations.
- Ability to respond swiftly and calmly in high-pressure scenarios.
- Proficient in driving emergency vehicles under challenging conditions and in compliance with traffic laws.
- Strong communication skills to engage with the public in a respectful manner.
- Ability to manage stress related to critical situations, including patient fatalities.
- Competence in accurately documenting services rendered.
- Ability to collaborate with co-workers and various emergency personnel.
- Skills in maintaining vehicles, equipment, and facilities.

Desirable Education and Experience

- Completion of training and experience to qualify as an EMT at the Basic level, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
