The Opportunity with McKinstry

We are looking for a Lead Preconstruction Engineer to join our expanding New Construction division. You will become part of a diverse team, gaining the chance to establish your role while working on exciting, intricate, and large-scale projects. Success in this position requires a strong sense of ownership, technical expertise, excellent communication skills, and a passion for continuous learning. Key responsibilities include:

Project Coordination

  • Assist in the Request for Proposal (RFP) and procurement processes.
  • Develop proficiency in conceptual estimating for large mechanical systems based on basic narratives and architectural plans, collaborating closely with a designated preconstruction manager.
  • Ensure effective management of scope and budget for assigned projects prior to the construction phase.
  • During the design and estimating phase, support design management, budget oversight, and risk management.
  • Review contracts, drawings, specifications, and other documentation to address inquiries.
  • Coordinate equipment procurement with the purchasing department and external vendors to facilitate material orders and expedite delivery.
  • Assist in crafting the Scope of Work for subcontractors.
  • Aid in the scheduling and coordination of trades.
  • Align the McKinstry scope of work with project drawings and specifications.
  • Support the preparation of monthly financial reports.
  • Communicate with architects, engineers, and owners to assist the Project Manager with daily tasks or act as Preconstruction Manager.

Communication

  • Proactively engage in your development process in conceptual estimating and overall preconstruction management, seeking ongoing feedback and mentorship to enhance your skill set.
  • Address inquiries from Superintendents and review contracts, drawings, and specifications promptly.
  • Consult with the project management team as needed to resolve issues.
  • Maintain communication with subcontractors, architects, engineers, and owners to support the project management team with daily operations.

Documentation

  • Generate and respond to Requests for Information (RFI) during the preconstruction phase.
  • Develop, process, and track equipment, material, and informational submittals.
  • Create site-specific work plans during the preconstruction phase to effectively communicate project plans for field operations.
  • Prepare and publish Operations and Maintenance Manuals for clients.
  • Acquire in-depth knowledge of contracts, drawings, and specifications for projects.
  • Assist in managing client and subcontractor change orders.
  • Prepare billing breakdowns and substantiation as required.
  • Update and manage all project documentation.
  • Conduct quantity take-offs and pricing estimates for both internal and external purposes.

Safety

  • Uphold and communicate McKinstry's safety standards.
  • Collaborate with the Safety team to develop and communicate site safety plans.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations for subcontractors and all on-site personnel.

What You Need to Succeed at McKinstry

  • Strong understanding of construction principles is essential.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, contracts, proposals, estimates, and other common documents is required.
  • A BA/BS degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Architecture, Facilities Management, or a related field—or equivalent work experience—is required.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Project is necessary; familiarity with SharePoint is preferred.
  • Experience in customer service or office administration is advantageous.

The compensation range for this position is competitive; however, the base pay may vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. This is a non-exempt role and will be compensated hourly. A bonus may be included as part of the compensation package, along with a comprehensive range of medical, financial, and other benefits, depending on the position offered. Base pay information is based on market location.
