Role Description

The Laboratory Equipment Category Strategist is essential in overseeing AbbVie's procurement strategies for laboratory equipment and associated capital initiatives.

This role entails the formulation and execution of detailed sourcing strategies across designated spending categories, supplier networks, and geographical areas.

Responsibilities include conducting thorough analyses to develop strategic sourcing plans that achieve cost efficiencies, minimize risks, and guarantee supply stability for laboratory functions.

Establishing and enforcing strong governance frameworks to monitor supplier performance against established KPIs and service agreements is also a key responsibility.

The incumbent will be tasked with articulating and implementing sourcing strategies for specific spending categories, capital projects, supplier networks, and/or geographic regions.

This role may require securing program support from various stakeholder groups.

The individual will create and oversee project plans, identify necessary resources, guide projects through the sourcing process, and ensure that outcomes align with the requirements of all affected organizations.

A proactive approach, strong analytical skills, and effective relationship management capabilities are crucial for successful collaboration with internal clients and external suppliers.

The ideal candidate should exhibit strategic insight, creativity, customer orientation, and a dedication to enhancing sourcing practices continuously.

Key Responsibilities


1. Develop, initiate, and manage the execution of Category Management strategies representing an annual spend of approximately $100M+.

2. Leverage expertise to drive cross-functional teams in developing and aligning strategies.


3. Deliver successful cross-divisional sourcing initiatives that yield corporate benefits, including cost savings, re-engineered business processes, sustainable agreements, and risk mitigation strategies.

4. Set ambitious targets for the team; assist in understanding performance metrics.

5. Inspire high performance by holding the team accountable for key results; assess milestone achievements and address challenges through appropriate channels.

6. Negotiate effectively by utilizing relevant information and best practices.

7. Convert negotiated agreements into performance-based, legally sound contracts that guide ongoing supplier management and program sustainability.

8. Communicate with management and stakeholder groups affected by sourcing decisions, employing effective oral and written communication skills to achieve organizational goals and enhance productivity.

9. Foster open, honest, and beneficial relationships with colleagues and stakeholders by establishing rapport, understanding others' needs, promoting common objectives, and following through on commitments.

10. Adapt communication to meet stakeholder needs, providing tailored information and feedback.


11. Proactively resolve conflicts constructively, focusing on work issues and collaborating to find mutually beneficial solutions.

12. Utilize analytical skills to gather, analyze, and establish spend baselines for sourcing processes.

13. Ensure timely execution of established sourcing processes for all projects, from initial scope development to implementation.

14. Identify and outline new potential sourcing projects, preparing scoping documents that detail project scope and key stakeholders.


15. Set standards for purchasing, identify approved key suppliers, and develop, execute, and manage sourcing strategies for all stakeholders to enhance Purchasing's overall value.

16. Obtain senior-level authorization for project activities and resource planning.
