Position: Dynamometer Engineer
Location: Plymouth, MI
Overview:
The Dynamometer Engineer plays a crucial role in the upkeep, diagnosis, modification, calibration, and management of dynamometer systems. This position requires a deep understanding of equipment, controls, data acquisition, and the supporting infrastructure for dyno department assets, which include dynamometers, instrumentation, emissions testing benches, combustion air units, and various water systems.
Key Responsibilities:
- Enhance the reliability and repeatability of test cells.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to support verification, validation, and development testing for current projects while implementing new methodologies for future initiatives.
- Design and oversee the production and installation of various dyno subsystems, including DUT mounting systems and plumbing configurations.
- Source suppliers, gather quotes, and provide recommendations to assist management in decision-making processes.
- Manage projects effectively to achieve objectives and develop recovery plans when necessary.
- Specify and maintain instrumentation in line with industry standards and internal testing protocols.
- Identify equipment requiring calibration and establish appropriate methods and schedules.
- Draft and implement test scripts to enhance test cell operations and increase development capabilities.
- Gain comprehensive knowledge of testing, durability, and calibration processes for all engines.
- Ensure compliance with engine testing standards and recommend enhancements to testing protocols for improved data acquisition.
- Troubleshoot engine and equipment issues within the dynamometer area.
- Assist engineers in diagnosing engine performance challenges, focusing on ensuring proper dyno functionality.
- Identify and implement best practices to improve efficiency in setup times and scheduling.
- Pursue ongoing education to remain informed about cutting-edge technology and industry best practices.
- Contribute to the creation and maintenance of documentation related to engine and dynamometer requirements.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- Experience with control systems, particularly AVL Puma, AVL Bobcat, and KS Tornado.
- A minimum of 3-5 years of specific experience in engine dynamometer operations.
- Familiarity with both AC and water brake dynamometers.
- A proactive individual with a positive attitude.
- Ability to work independently and adapt to changing project scopes.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Well-organized with effective prioritization skills.
