Position Overview

At Yale New Haven Health, we believe that every employee plays a vital role in our mission to provide exceptional patient care. Our core values - integrity, patient-centered focus, respect, accountability, and compassion - guide our daily operations and interactions.

The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) operates under the guidance of the Nurse Manager/Clinical Coordinator. This role involves assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care in accordance with established unit protocols. The RN will also oversee non-RN staff on the unit and may take on charge nurse responsibilities, ensuring effective delegation and supervision of unit activities. Flexibility to work across various nursing units may be required to meet patient and staffing needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • 1. Continuously assess the physical and psychosocial needs of patients throughout their care journey.
  • 2. Develop, communicate, and document individualized care plans that address patient-specific issues and desired outcomes, engaging patients, families, and the healthcare team in the process.
  • 3. Collaborate with the healthcare team to implement and coordinate the care plan effectively.
  • 4. Evaluate the care plan's effectiveness, the patient's response to treatment, and readiness for discharge, making necessary adjustments and referrals as needed.
  • 5. Plan educational initiatives based on the assessed learning needs and readiness of patients and families, documenting outcomes accordingly.
  • 6. Serve as a preceptor for new staff members, providing guidance and support.
  • 7. Assume charge nurse duties as required.
  • 8. Meet performance standards for customer service, teamwork, resource utilization, and professional development as outlined in performance evaluations.
  • 9. Perform additional duties as assigned to ensure the smooth operation of the unit.
  • 10. Demonstrate proficiency in the insertion and maintenance of neonatal peripheral intravenous lines, as well as obtaining neonatal lab samples and managing central intravenous lines.
  • 11. Exhibit competency in the management of neonates requiring respiratory support, including suctioning and chest physiotherapy.
  • 12. Provide initial care and stabilization for neonates during high-risk deliveries.
  • 13. Function competently as an RN during neonatal transport.
  • 14. Incorporate principles of developmentally supportive and family-centered care into practice.
  • 15. Support breastfeeding initiatives in the NICU through collaboration with Lactation Consultants as needed.
Qualifications

Education: Graduate of an accredited nursing program; BSN preferred. Proficient in electronic patient record systems and internet research for patient care literature.

Experience: Recent experience in level 2 or 3 NICU preferred.

Licensure: Valid Registered Nurse license in the State of Connecticut.
