Position Summary:

The University of New Mexico (UNM) Division of Adolescent Medicine is in search of a seasoned investigator capable of attaining a professorial rank on the research track. The candidate will spearhead initiatives focused on child and adolescent health.

Our Division is committed to fostering healthy adolescent development through research and quality enhancement projects that encompass the entire pediatric spectrum, from neonates to young adults. Current research areas include neonatal withdrawal syndrome, pediatric hepatitis C, reproductive health, substance abuse prevention and treatment, and weight management. Our researchers collaborate closely with state health priorities and engage in nationally funded pediatric clinical trials.

We seek a candidate who can lead and enhance our ongoing research and quality improvement efforts. The ideal applicant will possess expertise in mixed methods research, data collection, utilization of administrative databases, advanced statistical analysis, and effective dissemination of findings to both scientific and lay audiences. A proven history of securing research funding through proposal writing is essential. Key responsibilities will also include mentoring staff, medical students, residents, and junior faculty in community-based clinical research, as well as collaborating with pediatric medical specialists on quality improvement initiatives. Experience working with diverse populations in New Mexico and managing externally funded projects is highly desirable. If you are a dedicated researcher passionate about advancing adolescent health and possess the skills to lead impactful projects, we encourage you to consider this opportunity.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Serve as the principal author on reports for publication in peer-reviewed journals and for non-scientist policymaker audiences based on original research; present findings at local, national, and international conferences.
  2. Provide technical and statistical guidance to research staff, collaborators, programmers, and graduate students on research design, data collection, data analysis, and dissemination.
  3. Independently manage complex research projects by planning schedules, developing budgets, and overseeing workflow.
  4. Stay updated on advanced data collection, administration, management technologies, and analytic methods; assist the Division and colleagues in enhancing research quality and competitiveness in national grant competitions.
  5. Act as the principal investigator on multiple projects, defining project scope and direction, leading research design, and engaging in planning activities (monitoring budgets, timelines, IRB, COI, etc.) while overseeing scientific activities.
  6. Represent the Division in external collaborations and communications, including professional activities in the field (locally and nationally) and other forms of representation.
  7. Mentor pediatric faculty, students, and other staff members in research and professional development.
  8. Supervise staff, student assistants, administrative assistants, and programmers to execute research studies and projects; teach and advise on research methodologies.
  9. Prepare grant proposals to secure additional funding for pediatric research initiatives.
  10. Collaborate with Division principal investigators on the design, analysis, and reporting of funded projects.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • An earned doctorate (PhD, DrPH, ScD, MD, or equivalent) in a relevant discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience in leadership, research, mentoring, and writing successful grant applications in clinical adolescent research and evaluation.
  • Authorized to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Five years of experience in adolescent health research, particularly in the area of SBIRT, with diverse populations in New Mexico.
  • A history of obtaining external NIH funding as a principal investigator.
  • Proven track record of collaborating with multidisciplinary research teams.
  • A demonstrated commitment to learner success and teaching.
  • A commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, along with experience working with broadly diverse communities.

Application Instructions:

Only applications submitted through the official UNMJobs site will be accepted. A complete application must include a CV, a cover letter addressing your experience with the Preferred Qualifications, and a copy of a recent manuscript that exemplifies your work.
