Position Overview

The Anesthesia Technician is accountable for the functionality and upkeep of anesthesia apparatus.

Key Responsibilities

  • Equipment Management: Possesses comprehensive knowledge of departmental equipment, including operation, troubleshooting, and repair initiation.
    • Conducts daily checks on monitoring devices and aids in the preparation of equipment (such as changing anesthesia circuits) in accordance with established protocols to guarantee optimal patient safety and care.
    • Alerts the Bio-Medical Specialist regarding any equipment requiring repairs to maintain patient safety.
    • Takes necessary actions for malfunctioning equipment and utilizes resources if troubleshooting fails.
    • May connect ECG cables to IV poles post patient placement on the operating table.
  • Collaborative Patient Care: Works in synergy with team members to enhance patient outcomes.
    • Coordinates activities beyond the unit and accompanies anesthesiologists and/or surgeons as needed.
    • Prepares all pressure transducers and ensures proper calibration of transducers and pressure modules as required.
    • Responds to emergencies in the operating room and sets up necessary emergency equipment.
    • Communicates effectively with all surgical team members regarding special equipment and supply needs.
  • Quality Control: Maintains quality assurance records and logs.
    • Documents maintenance activities of equipment as directed.
    • Keeps accurate department statistics, QA monitors, and submits written reports to supervisors.
  • Safety and Infection Control: Adheres to safety protocols and infection control practices, monitoring the environment and equipment to ensure cleanliness standards are upheld.
    • Opens sterile supplies aseptically based on patient requirements and procedure specifications.
    • Follows decontamination procedures for all instruments utilized during procedures.
    • Cleans all anesthesia equipment in accordance with infection control standards.
    • Complies with safety and infection control policies, demonstrating knowledge and skills in waste disposal and standard precautions.
  • Supply Management: Ensures availability of supplies necessary for anesthesia administration.
    • Inspects all operating rooms between cases to confirm adequate supplies and medications are readily accessible.
    • Informs management of supplies that need to be ordered externally.
    • Requests supplies as necessary from the Anesthesia Workroom.
  • Equipment Readiness: Ensures anesthesia machines and carts are organized and fully stocked.
    • Cleans anesthesia machine surfaces after operating rooms conclude daily activities.
    • Collects and replenishes anesthesia supply carts to ensure operating rooms are consistently prepared for use.
  • Accesses medication delivery areas as authorized in the execution of assigned duties.
  • Performs additional related tasks as required.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Certification from the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists & Technicians within two years of employment is preferred.
  • BCLS Certification is preferred.
  • Prior experience in a hospital setting is preferred.
  • Effective communication skills are essential.
