Compensation Range

$132,810 - $204,636 Annually

$132,810 - $170,556 Annually at the SES.2 Level

Position Summary

We are looking for exceptional Physical Scientists and Engineers with expertise in fields such as plasma physics, radiation transport, atomic physics, nuclear physics, physical chemistry, condensed matter physics, computational physics, or hydrodynamics. This role involves addressing national security challenges through computational, theoretical, and experimental physics related to nuclear explosives. You will work within the Design Physics Division of the Strategic Deterrence Directorate.

This position may offer a hybrid work schedule, allowing for a combination of in-person and remote work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze the intricate physics interactions involved in nuclear explosions.
  • Design and evaluate experiments that investigate the physics of nuclear explosives.
  • Simulate weapon phenomena and conduct assessments and certification tasks using physical models in computational codes.
  • Establish and implement stockpile stewardship for specific weapon systems.
  • Present and share research findings at scientific conferences and in peer-reviewed journals, both in classified and unclassified settings.
  • Develop expertise in related physics fields crucial for weapon assessment and certification.
  • Travel as necessary based on project requirements.
  • Support initiatives that foster a culture of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accountability in the workplace.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities at the SES.3 Level

  • Independently conduct in-depth analysis of complex physics interactions in nuclear explosions.
  • Serve as a technical expert on multidisciplinary teams.
  • Lead the design and analysis of experiments related to nuclear explosives.

Qualifications

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, requiring U.S. Citizenship.
  • PhD in physics, engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent demonstrated knowledge.
  • Proven track record of conducting outstanding research in relevant physics and engineering areas.
  • Experience with computer-based design and experimental analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to master new physics fields, showcasing creativity and a broad understanding of complex physical processes.
  • Experience utilizing advanced computational facilities for applied physics research.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills necessary for authoring technical reports and delivering scientific presentations.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and within a multidisciplinary research team.
  • Self-motivated with a proactive approach to solving challenging problems.

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. Selected candidates will undergo a Federal background investigation to determine eligibility for access to classified information.
