Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Staff Attorney III to join our team at the Education and Labor Cabinet. As a key member of our Office of Legal and Legislative Services, you will provide complex legal services to agencies within the Cabinet, handling unique, controversial, or technical matters that require extensive original research and analysis.

Key Responsibilities
  • Handle complex legal matters related to Wage and Hour and Occupational Safety & Health (OSH) compliance violation cases, performing extensive original research to prepare pleadings.
  • Under minimal supervision, prepare, try, and argue complex cases before administrative bodies, federal bankruptcy courts, and other state and federal courts.
  • Analyze cases related to violations of Kentucky's wage and hour and OSH laws, conduct negotiations and investigations, and make legal recommendations.
  • Advises and assists lesser experienced attorneys, collaborates with other attorneys on complex cases, and reviews and responds to requests submitted to the Department of Workplace Standards.
  • Reviews Cabinet policies and various documents for legality, makes policy recommendations, and performs other duties as required.
Requirements
  • Must have two years of experience as a licensed attorney in the practice of law.
  • Must be admitted to practice law and in good standing in the Commonwealth of Kentucky or comply with Kentucky Supreme Court Rule (SCR) (limited certification of admission to practice), SCR (attorney participants in defender or legal services programs), SCR (practice pending admission).
  • Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification.
Working Conditions

Duties are performed primarily in both office and courtroom settings, with travel required. This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS.
