Overview: The Greenhouse Operations Specialist will collaborate closely with the Chief Culinary Officer to manage the daily functions of our greenhouse and adjacent gardens, overseeing all related tasks. The ideal candidate should possess a genuine passion for horticulture, experience in culinary settings, excellent communication and customer service abilities, and the initiative to work autonomously.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide comprehensive care for greenhouse plants, including planting, transplanting, pruning, watering, and fertilizing, while conducting regular inspections to ensure optimal growing conditions and addressing any pest or disease issues that arise.
  • Maintain the structural integrity of the greenhouse, including the upkeep of wooden planters through oiling and replacing deteriorating materials, as well as managing the surrounding environment.
  • Ensure cleanliness and sanitation of watering systems, greenhouse facilities, and all related supplies.
  • Develop and implement a watering and fertilizing schedule, coordinating efforts for weekends and holidays.
  • Keep the greenhouse organized and visually appealing for public viewing, including labeling plants and conducting tours for visitors.
  • Train team members in greenhouse operations, gardening techniques, and how to effectively lead tours.
  • Collaborate with the culinary team to harvest daily for catering events and restaurant services, as well as managing the organization and rotation of greenhouse products in storage.
  • Work with the purchasing manager to order and organize greenhouse supplies and materials, manage deliveries, and maintain detailed records, including soil testing and analysis.
  • Monitor for pests, diseases, and any irregularities in plant growth, implementing appropriate strategies and maintaining thorough records.
  • Conduct soil testing to identify and address any nutrient deficiencies affecting plant health.
  • In partnership with the Chief Culinary Officer, create and execute a year-round planting schedule, including seed saving and propagation, while managing the entire lifecycle of seedlings from seeding to hardening-off.
  • Plan and implement sustainable practices regarding heating, electricity, and water usage.
  • Investigate methods to enhance growth efficiency and harvest yields, providing recommendations on fertilizers and growing mediums.
  • Comfortable working in a warm and humid greenhouse environment year-round.
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Possess strong communication, training, management, and supervisory skills, along with knowledge of safety and environmental regulations.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of two years of experience in a nursery, farm, or greenhouse setting. Culinary experience is advantageous.

Education:

  • Associate degree in greenhouse management, or a bachelor's degree in horticulture, plant science, or a related field.
