Position Overview

The Princeton Language and Intelligence Initiative at Princeton University is seeking applications for a Chief Research Software Engineer. This initiative encompasses three primary research areas: (a) Enhancing the design, evaluation, safety, and comprehension of large AI models, particularly language models; (b) Implementing large AI models across various academic fields; and (c) Investigating the societal implications of large AI models. The initiative aims to develop open-source software and models.

Role Summary

In this role, you will be a key member of dynamic research teams dedicated to creating innovative software solutions for advanced AI research, contributing significantly to projects alongside Princeton's esteemed researchers. As a Chief Research Software Engineer, you will lead a team of Research Software Engineers focused on diverse engineering solutions related to large AI models. Your extensive technical expertise and project management skills will enhance the team's computational capabilities and translate critical initiative priorities into effective engineering solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Management and Leadership: Oversee a team of Research Software Engineers committed to the initiative's goals. Manage their efforts and all team software development activities while setting project priorities and adhering to best practices in project management.
  • Provide technical guidance to improve the performance and quality of both new and existing codebases through hands-on engagement with ongoing research.
  • Mentor and educate less experienced Research Software Engineers, including those from other teams, in advanced computational techniques derived from developing innovative research software solutions.
  • Conduct training sessions for the PLI RSE team on both research software engineering and AI-specific topics.
  • Organize professional development activities for the team, including leading code reviews.
  • Monitor and manage all team projects, establishing best practices tailored to each project.
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations for direct report staff.
  • Support the professional growth of team members through coordinated activities and skill acquisition.
  • Foster a diverse and collaborative environment among Research Software Engineers and participate in hiring committees.
  • Create an inclusive atmosphere where best engineering practices are valued and prioritized.

Software Development:

  • Collaborate with a diverse team to enhance large AI models, conducting experiments, analyzing results, and co-authoring research publications.
  • Develop and maintain shared infrastructure for training and fine-tuning large AI models.
  • Support the use of software libraries and maintain GitHub repositories.
  • Document projects comprehensively for both researchers and future Research Software Engineers.
  • Act as a liaison with research computing staff on GPU cluster issues.

Professional Development:

  • Engage in learning the foundational science, mathematics, statistics, and algorithms pertinent to computational research questions.
  • Stay informed about software development tools, techniques, and best practices.
  • Access a community of research software engineers and ongoing professional development opportunities.

Qualifications

  • Essential: A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related computational field; solid coding skills and experience with large AI models; experience leading software projects; familiarity with GPU computing environments and ML frameworks; prior research experience in AI/ML; strong communication skills.
  • Preferred: At least one year of experience managing a small team.
