Position Overview - Fire Protection Engineer
As a key member of our team at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, the Fire Protection Engineer will play a vital role in ensuring the safety and compliance of our facilities.

This position requires a proactive approach to managing fire protection elements within intricate projects. You will be expected to:

  • Oversee the fire safety components of multifaceted projects.
  • Independently assess, select, and implement both standard and advanced engineering methodologies to address a wide array of fire protection challenges.
  • Take ownership of all project facets, including design documents, timelines, and budget management, while leading assigned personnel.
  • Engage with clients and contractors to ensure project alignment and satisfaction.
  • Develop comprehensive strategies for the design and conceptualization of complex fire protection systems.
  • Generate initial drafts for working drawings and ensure their accuracy and completeness.
  • Analyze engineering data for the benefit of designers and drafters.
  • Continuously review drawings to maintain precision and promote the skills of the design team.
  • Monitor project schedules and financial plans for assigned tasks.
  • Summarize relevant codes and integrate them into the design documentation.
  • Establish and maintain communication with clients through the Project Manager to ensure consistent information flow.
  • Conduct site visits as required to support project needs.
  • Collaborate with other disciplines and consultants to achieve project goals.
  • Review contract documents and shop drawings, providing responses to inquiries as necessary.
  • Prepare regular project status updates for review by management.
  • Ensure that the Construction Services Department is well-informed about project specifics.
  • Draft specifications in partnership with the Technical Services Department.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in commercial or institutional environments.
- Experience in healthcare, technology, or civic facilities is advantageous.
- Interest in sustainable design or LEED certification is a plus but not mandatory.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license is essential.
- Previous experience in commercial or institutional settings.
- Proficiency in MS Office and relevant engineering software.
- A commitment to actively participating in our collaborative culture is crucial.
