Position Overview - Fire Protection Engineer
As a key member of our team at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, the Fire Protection Engineer will play a vital role in ensuring the safety and integrity of our facilities.

Key Responsibilities:
In this position, you will be responsible for:

  • Overseeing the fire protection components of intricate projects.
  • Independently assessing, selecting, and implementing standard and advanced engineering methodologies to address a wide array of fire protection challenges.
  • Managing all facets of the work, including technical drawings and specifications, adhering to timelines and budgets, and guiding assigned personnel.
  • Engaging with clients and contractors to ensure project alignment.
  • Conceptualizing and designing sophisticated systems and projects.
  • Formulating a foundational approach to the working drawings.
  • Interpreting engineering data for design teams.
  • Continuously reviewing drawings for accuracy and completeness while enhancing the skills of design staff.
  • Monitoring project schedules and budgets.
  • Reviewing relevant codes and documenting them for design integration.
  • Establishing and maintaining communication with clients through the Project Manager to ensure the integrity of information.
  • Conducting site visits as required.
  • Coordinating efforts with other disciplines and consultants.
  • Reviewing contract documents and shop drawings, addressing requests for information.
  • Preparing regular project status updates for management review.
  • Ensuring the Construction Services Department is well-informed about project specifics.
  • Collaborating with the Technical Services Department to draft specifications.
  • Performing additional duties as necessary.
Preferred Qualifications:
We seek candidates with:
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in commercial or institutional environments.
  • Experience in healthcare, science and technology, or civic facilities.
  • Interest in sustainable design or LEED certification is advantageous but not mandatory.
Required Qualifications:
To be considered for this role, candidates must possess:
  • A Bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering.
  • A Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Prior experience in commercial or institutional settings.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, Trane TRACE, or similar software, along with manufacturer selection tools.
  • A commitment to actively participating in our employee-owned culture.
