About the Organization
The St. Louis Jewish Community Center (the J) has been a cornerstone of health and cultural engagement in the community for over 140 years.
Position Summary
The J Summer Day Camp program holds accreditation from the American Camp Association (ACA). The camp provides a variety of enriching activities aimed at helping campers Play, Connect, and Grow each day, including swimming, arts and crafts, climbing, team-building exercises, sports, and more. We are currently seeking Camp Unit Leaders for our Chesterfield location.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee the safety and well-being of campers at all times.
- Supervise and support Camp Counselors.
- Maintain accurate records of attendance and group assignments.
- Administer first aid when necessary.
- Plan and organize engaging camp activities.
- Fill in as a specialist when required.
- Foster positive interactions between campers and counselors, ensuring active engagement.
- Monitor camper and counselor behavior, addressing issues proactively and reactively as needed.
- Communicate effectively with parents regarding camper behavior, sharing both positive and constructive feedback.
- Participate in swimming activities with campers as directed, assisting Swim Instructors and ensuring safety during free swim.
- Attend to the physical and emotional needs of both campers and counselors.
- Exhibit a supportive team spirit and maintain a positive attitude.
- Deliver exceptional customer service consistently.
- Identify and respond to opportunities for problem-solving.
- Observe camper behavior, assess appropriateness, and apply suitable behavior management techniques.
- Enforce safety regulations and emergency protocols.
- Adhere to and enforce all J and Day Camp policies and procedures.
- Conduct performance evaluations under the guidance of Site Director(s).
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Previous experience in camp or childcare settings is essential.
- Ability to perform major tasks at camp, including auditory, visual, ambulatory, cognitive, communication, and physical skills.
- Strong communication skills with peers, parents, and campers of varying ages and skill levels.
- Ability to engage and supervise children enthusiastically.
- Capability to assist in teaching activities; specialized knowledge is required for sports, specialty, and arts camps.
- Preparedness to assist campers in emergency situations, including fire, evacuation, illness, or injury.
- Exemplary character, integrity, and adaptability.
- Possess enthusiasm, a sense of humor, patience, and self-control.
- Judaic experiences are preferred, or a willingness to learn.
- Current American Red Cross CPR/First Aid certification is required for certain camps (training provided if necessary).
- Some camps may require successful registration on the Missouri Family Care Safety Registry as a condition of employment, which must be maintained in good standing.
