Position Overview:

The Medical Lab Technician (MLT) is responsible for conducting both routine and advanced laboratory examinations to support the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of illnesses. Operating under the guidance of a medical laboratory scientist or laboratory manager, the MLT ensures the precision and dependability of test outcomes.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Sample Collection and Processing:
    Gather, prepare, and handle various specimen types, including blood, urine, and other bodily fluids. Guarantee proper management and storage of samples to preserve their quality.
  • Testing and Analysis:
    Execute routine and specialized tests on specimens utilizing automated analyzers and manual methods. Tests may encompass hematology, microbiology, chemistry, immunology, and serology.
  • Quality Control:
    Implement quality control measures and calibrate laboratory instruments to ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results. Follow established protocols and procedures to uphold quality standards.
  • Result Interpretation:
    Evaluate test outcomes and compare them with reference ranges. Identify and communicate any abnormal or unexpected results to the supervising medical personnel or laboratory manager.
  • Documentation:
    Meticulously document test results and maintain organized laboratory records. Ensure all documentation adheres to regulatory standards and institutional policies.
  • Equipment Maintenance:
    Conduct routine maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory instruments. Report any equipment issues or repair needs to the laboratory supervisor.
  • Safety and Compliance:
    Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures to maintain a secure working environment. Follow infection control practices and comply with regulatory guidelines, including OSHA and CLIA standards.
  • Communication:
    Collaborate with healthcare professionals, including physicians and nurses, to discuss test results and provide necessary information. Maintain effective communication with other laboratory staff and contribute to a positive team atmosphere.

Qualifications:
Education:
  • Associate's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or a related field from an accredited institution.

Certification:
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) by a recognized certifying body, such as the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or the American Medical Technologists (AMT).

Experience:
Three years of experience as a Medical Lab Technician preferred. Experience in a clinical laboratory setting is advantageous.

Skills:
  • Proficiency in performing laboratory tests and utilizing laboratory equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in test results.
  • Excellent organizational and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift moderate weights.
  • Manual dexterity and the capacity to perform repetitive tasks.

Working Conditions:
  • Work in a clinical laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards.
  • May require occasional weekend or evening shifts based on laboratory needs.
