The Emergency Department at the Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration is seeking a skilled Health Technician to join our team. As a Health Technician, you will play a critical role in providing high-quality patient care and support to our patients and staff.
Key Responsibilities- Provide technical support to the Emergency Department, including assisting with patient care, maintaining equipment, and performing various medical procedures.
- Respond to emergency situations, including providing care to critically ill and injured patients, under the direction of a physician or registered nurse.
- Assist with patient transport, including positioning patients on stretchers or transport units, and ensuring proper lifting and securing of patients.
- Monitor and maintain Electrocardiographic equipment, including 12-lead electrocardiograms and accessories.
- Prepare and obtain special equipment and supplies for various treatment or diagnostic procedures.
- Assist with processing orders and records, including laboratory, radiology, and other reports from DHCP/VISTA.
- Participate in team and emergency department staff conferences, and communicate effectively with other team members and staff.
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- One year of specialized experience in a healthcare setting, including experience with patient care, medical procedures, and emergency response.
- Knowledge of direct patient care techniques, including activities of daily living, ambulating patients, infection control, and emergency response.
- Ability to recognize signs of medical emergencies and apply basic first-aid principles in responding to emergency situations.
- Current EMT-P or EMT-B certification is preferred.
The work is performed in a variety of medical center settings, including the Emergency Department and Triage areas, as well as during emergencies on hospital wards, in hallways, and in inclement weather.
The incumbent must be able to withstand physically, emotionally, and psychologically stressful situations, and maintain physical control or defend against emotionally ill patients, substance abusers, and other high-risk patients.
Physical RequirementsThe work requires regular and recurring ability to maintain physical control or defend against emotionally ill patients, substance abusers, and other high-risk patients.
The incumbent must be able to utilize good mechanics to withstand physically, emotionally, and psychologically stressful situations.
