Job Summary

SSM Health is seeking a skilled Cytology Technical Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and performing cytology duties, including ThinPrep screening, special cytological preparations, and evaluating specimens for interpretation.

Responsibilities
  • Perform microscopic examination of cellular specimens to recognize, identify, and screen for evidence of morphologic changes.
  • Analyze and classify cellular constituents in accordance with established criteria.
  • Identify questionable cellular configuration and review patient clinical history to establish preliminary interpretation of abnormal morphological features.
  • Prepare final reports of gynecological cytology specimens and present abnormal specimens to pathologists for evaluative diagnosis.
  • Perform cytopreparatory techniques, staining, and cover slipping procedures, ensuring adherence to established techniques and departmental quality control standards.
  • Analyze and record data, entering and retrieving information using the laboratory information system.
  • Assist supervisor with training and orientation of new employees and medical staff, performing staff competencies and technical assessments.
  • Develop new procedures and techniques as requested, maintaining a procedures manual and reviewing and revising it as needed.
  • Participate in continuing education to stay up-to-date on changing techniques, procedures, and interpretive findings associated with cytology.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent years of experience and education.
  • Three years' technical experience in a laboratory setting.
