Instructors will be responsible for delivering comprehensive training to U.S. Navy Surface Warfare Officers and Enlisted personnel engaged in various navigation, seamanship, and ship handling courses. This role also involves contributing to curriculum development as directed by the Surface Warfare Officer School, focusing on training for Junior Officers of the Deck (Underway) and Officers of the Deck (Underway). The instructional approach combines classroom learning with advanced simulator training. Candidates must possess strong computer skills and demonstrate the ability to quickly master sophisticated maritime simulation software and tools.

INSTRUCTOR QUALIFICATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • Extensive practical knowledge and expertise as a former qualified Navy Surface Warfare Officer (or equivalent). Must be qualified as Officer of the Deck (underway) on a minimum of two Surface Combatants. Additional relevant experience includes at least two Division Officer tours or serving as Officer in Charge of a Military Sealift Command (MSC) Detachment: OR experience as a Tug Boat Captain or a U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) licensed officer, with significant at-sea service as a Second or Chief Mate on a merchant vessel, demonstrating thorough knowledge of navigation, seamanship, and ship handling principles as outlined in the Navigation, Seamanship, Ship handling Training Requirements Document (NSS TRD).
  • In-depth understanding of Navigation, Ship handling, and Seamanship, covering areas such as: (1) Shipboard Navigation Department Organization, (2) Weather patterns, (3) Nautical Charts, (4) Maneuvering boards, (5) Visual Navigation Aids, (6) Law of the Sea, (7) Voyage Management System (ECDIS), (8) ARPA/Radar, (9) Tides and Currents, (10) Underway Replenishment, (11) Anchoring procedures, (12) Duties of Underway Officer of the Deck, (13) Operational Risk Management, (14) Ship handling Fundamentals, (15) Officer of the Deck Mathematics.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, 1972 (COLREGs) and the ability to instruct surface warfare officers on international and inland navigation rules. Key focus areas include: (1) Lights, flags, and sound signals; (2) Head-on, overtaking, and crossing situations; (3) Sail, power, and towing vessels; (4) General prudential rule; and (5) Buoys and channel markers.
  • Completion of a VMS Operator Course or A VMS 9 Operator or an approved equivalent (ECDIS).
  • Practical experience with adult learning methodologies, instructional design, and educational technology application. Proven ability to innovate and enhance training programs in areas where traditional methods may not be effective.
  • Demonstrated experience in Navy Training Course Management, including curriculum development, course revisions, master scheduling, and student oversight.
  • Experience in delivering educational content in both classroom and laboratory environments.
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance.
