Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Accountant to join our team at the City of Mesa, AZ. As a Senior Accountant, you will be responsible for performing advanced journey-level accounting analysis and administrative work in our Financial Services Department.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform advanced accounting analysis and prepare financial statements, notes to the financial statements, budget schedules, and statistical schedules for the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR).
  • Independently resolve day-to-day problems and make decisions with considerable initiative and independent judgment.
  • Supervise and lead teams of accountants and provide guidance and support as needed.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to improve and streamline accounting processes.
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or related field.
  • Minimum of five years of full-time professional experience in accounting, auditing, budgeting, or closely related financial activity.
  • Minimum of one year lead/supervisory experience.
  • Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and Modified Accrual Accounting.
  • Experience with Advantage software and payroll functions.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and/or Certified Governmental Financial Manager (CGFM) certifications preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Governmental accounting experience.
  • Experience preparing Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR).
  • Knowledge of Community Facility Districts (CFD's), joint ventures, and cost accounting and allocation.
  • Experience with debt and lease accounting.
