Job Summary:

We are seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Operator to join our team at Fairfax County, VA. As a Heavy Equipment Operator, you will be responsible for operating heavy equipment such as tractors, cranes, tandem dump trucks, loaders, motor graders, rubber tire loaders, backhoes, track loaders, excavators, skid steers, and low-boy tractor and trailer to perform various maintenance and construction activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate heavy equipment to perform maintenance and construction activities
  • Perform daily equipment inspection and complete an operational checklist
  • Act as crew leader when designated and engage in manual labor as required
  • Ensure all appropriate safety procedures are followed when working near heavy, medium, or small equipment
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Responsible Land Disturber Certificate (RLD)

Requirements:

  • Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade
  • Three years of experience operating motorized equipment and/or semi-tractor trailers
  • Valid driver's license
  • Commercial driver's license (CDL) Class A
  • Tanker Endorsement within 12 months of hire

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans for utility locations prior to excavation
  • Experience leading crews and maintenance and construction projects
  • Two years or more as a crew lead or foreman
  • Two years of experience plowing snow
  • Two years of experience operating equipment such as: low boy tractor and trailer, excavator, backhoe, skid steer, rubber tire loader

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to pass pre-employment physicals
  • With or without reasonable accommodation, performs duties to include pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, stooping, walking, climbing in and out of catch basins and manholes

Selection Procedure:

Panel interview and may include exercise

Bonus Eligibility:

Positions within this classification that require a CDL that are general merit may be eligible for a one-time hiring incentive bonus for new county employees only
