Employee Relations Consultant and Trainer

We are seeking an Employee Relations Specialist/Trainer who will be instrumental in cultivating a supportive workplace atmosphere at South Dakota State University. This role is central to our initiatives aimed at enhancing every stage of the employee experience, facilitating performance management, and ensuring adherence to institutional and state regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Guide supervisors through performance management processes, including disciplinary actions, grievances, and performance improvement plans.
2. Coach management on effective performance documentation, navigating challenging conversations, and assessing performance ratings.
3. Collaborate with university leadership to address complex issues.
4. Conduct interviews with employees to address personnel and performance challenges impacting morale and productivity.
5. Assess and assist in resolving HR-related issues, investigate complaints, and provide guidance on compliance with university policies and state laws.
6. Review remote work and ADA accommodation requests.
7. Analyze trends to identify training requirements and develop professional development programs.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree completed by the time of appointment;
- At least one year of experience in human resources or a related support role;

- Capability to engage effectively with individuals at various levels within the university;
- Customer service orientation;
- Proficient written and verbal communication skills.
- PHR, SPHR, or SHRM certification;
- Experience in advising or coaching on employment matters;
- Knowledge of interpreting and applying policies and regulations;
- Strong critical thinking and clear communication skills;
- Experience in maintaining confidentiality and managing multiple deadlines;
- Proven ability to influence and guide others effectively;
- Experience in conducting investigative interviews.
