Mountain View, California, United States Lightmatter Full time
Job Overview

Position: Laser Characterization Engineer

At Lightmatter, we are pioneering the development of chips that facilitate advanced artificial intelligence computing clusters. We are seeking a dedicated engineer or scientist with a strong collaborative spirit and a commitment to innovation, particularly in the realm of optical computing.

The Laser Characterization Engineer will be responsible for testing and characterizing laser technologies tailored for high-performance AI datacom applications. This role encompasses a wide range of tasks, from evaluating laser dies and components to control integrated circuits and packaged multi-chip modules. You will collaborate closely with our diverse engineering teams and external partners to model measurement outcomes, assess system efficiency, and address challenges throughout the stages of prototyping, product development, and mass production.

This position demands substantial laboratory expertise in integrated photonics and fiber optics, alongside a solid background in laser and electronics testing and measurement. Essential skills include analytical thinking, problem-solving capabilities, and the ability to communicate and document findings effectively.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with architecture, design, product engineering, and external partners to ascertain component capabilities and testing requirements.
  • Identify challenges and facilitate the design feedback loop through early prototyping and feasibility assessments to enhance performance.
  • Develop and execute testing protocols to evaluate and compare various engineering methodologies.
  • Maintain testing apparatus and create automation processes to boost efficiency.
  • Analyze test data, document findings, and provide constructive feedback to the development team.
  • Document and communicate methodologies, data, and analyses clearly, both orally and in writing.
  • Set up laser testing equipment and modules.
  • Assess the impact of lasers on data link performance metrics such as BERT and OSNR.
Qualifications
  • Master's or PhD in Photonics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Over 6 years of experience in photonics test development, ideally within integrated photonics or laser technologies.
  • Proficient in the characterization of lasers and semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs), including optical spectrum measurements, noise characterization, thermal dependence, and reliability assessments.
  • Experience in testing at die-level, board-level, and wafer-scale.
  • Familiarity with testing equipment such as benchtop lasers, vector network analyzers (VNA), optical spectrum analyzers (OSA), electrical spectrum analyzers (ESA), bit error rate testers (BERT), and high-speed oscilloscopes.
  • Proficient in programming languages like Python or LabView for test automation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and resolve issues during testing.
  • Ability to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences with clarity.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience in testing packaged laser modules and/or transceivers for datacom applications.
  • Experience in high-volume manufacturing environments from new product introduction to mass production.
  • Experience in setting up laboratory equipment and experimental configurations for laser/SOA testing.
  • A proactive learner with a self-starter attitude and a willingness to tackle tasks of any size.
Benefits
  • Comprehensive Health Care Plan (Medical, Dental & Vision)
  • 401k matching
  • Life Insurance (Basic, Voluntary & AD&D)
  • Generous Time Off (Vacation, Sick & Public Holidays)
  • Paid Family Leave
  • Short Term & Long Term Disability
  • Training & Development
  • Flexible, hybrid workplace model
  • Stock Option Plan

We offer competitive compensation, with a base salary range for this role across all US locations being $160,000-$190,000. Your salary will be determined based on your location, experience, educational background, and market data.
