Firefighter Trainee

Position Title:

Job Overview:

Under the guidance of a Fire Department Officer, Firefighters engage in critical activities such as fire suppression, rescue operations, and property protection. This role serves as a first responder, delivering essential life support and emergency assistance to individuals experiencing sudden medical emergencies or accidents. Additionally, Firefighters are involved in fire prevention initiatives, which include inspections, code enforcement, and community education. Participation in drills and various training sessions is a fundamental aspect of this specialized position, which adheres to the performance and training standards set by the National and Salt Lake City Fire Departments. All candidates selected for this role must attain journey-level certification by completing an approved apprenticeship program recognized by the Utah State Department of Labor.

Employment Conditions:

Offers of employment are contingent upon the successful completion of a criminal background check, in accordance with City policy and applicable laws. Criminal offenses will be evaluated on an individual basis and do not automatically disqualify candidates from employment with the City.

APPLICATION PROCESS:

Interested candidates must submit an online application prior to the deadline. Candidates may upload relevant certifications, such as NREMT/Utah Paramedic certificates or DD-214 forms, although this is not mandatory.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Be at least 18 years old
• Possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent
• Hold a valid driver's license
• Be authorized to work in the US on or before the written exam date

ASSESSMENT PROCESS:

The evaluation process includes:

• National Testing Network (NTN) FireTEAM Written Exam - 20%
• National Testing Network Online Video Recorded Interview - 30%
• Oral Board Assessment - 50%
• Task Performance Assessment for Candidates (TPAC) - Pass/Fail

Salt Lake City Fire Department will also accept valid CPAT certificates in lieu of passing the TPAC.

SCORING AND RANKING:

Final scores will be calculated by summing the weighted scores from the written examination, online video interview, and oral board assessment. Candidates will be ranked based on their final scores, with preference points added as follows:

• NREMT/Utah Paramedic: 1 point
• Veteran: 5 points
• Disabled Veteran: 10 points
