Key Responsibilities


The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for coordinating nursing care, which includes direct patient care, education for patients and families, and managing transitions of care.

The RN plays a vital role in professional nursing practice across various settings and throughout the continuum of care to meet the needs of patients and their families.

Within the Mayo Nursing Care Model, the RN is accountable for planning, implementing, evaluating, and communicating all aspects of nursing care for assigned patients.


Professional Leadership:
The RN provides leadership through various activities, including serving as a preceptor, engaging in informal leadership roles, and participating in quality improvement initiatives. The RN delegates patient care based on skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal responsibility, and resource availability. Strong communication skills, mentoring abilities, and participation in committees or projects are essential.

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited nursing program is required.


All entry-level associate degree registered nurses with a start date after a specified date must provide documented evidence of completing a baccalaureate degree in nursing within five years from their start date.


Entry-level associate degree registered nurses with a start date prior to that specified date must provide documented evidence of completing a baccalaureate degree in nursing as required by the program in place at the time of hire.


Preferred qualifications include one year of RN experience in a relevant care setting or one year of LPN experience at Mayo Clinic.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills are necessary, along with experience in a collaborative team environment. Proficiency in computer skills is required, and prior experience with electronic medical record systems is preferred. Flexibility to work various shifts, including days, evenings, nights, holidays, weekends, and on-call is essential. The ability to adapt to unpredictable situations in the workplace is crucial. Demonstrated leadership, effective communication, and strong critical thinking skills are expected.

Licensure and Certification:
Current RN license as per state regulations is mandatory.

Maintaining Basic Life Support (BLS) and ACLS competency from recognized programs is required.

Positions not located on campus may not require current BLS competency based on the work area.

Additional state licensure(s) and/or specialty certification/training may be required based on the work area.
