POSITION SUMMARY:

Supports the school media specialist in developing and managing an efficient media program that aligns with the school's organizational objectives as outlined in the School Improvement Plan. This position reports to the Principal or designated representative.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Oversees the circulation desk and manages its operations, which includes: maintaining patron records; circulating books and equipment; shelving materials; collecting fines for lost items; printing and distributing overdue notices; assisting in scheduling class visits; and handling phone inquiries.

Maintains the media collection by: processing new acquisitions; removing damaged, outdated, and inaccurate materials; organizing library shelves; inspecting items for damage; repairing books; and aiding in the selection of new resources.

Provides assistance to patrons, including students, parents, faculty, and staff with: locating materials; recommending books; accessing online resources; and supporting students with assignments and research. Supervises student activities within the media center and technology usage.

Performs clerical duties such as: distributing reports and information to faculty and staff mailboxes; typing memos, letters, and documents; making copies; and preparing reports.

Assists with media program initiatives including media collection inventory, equipment inventory, book fairs, reading programs, and author visits.

Ensures a tidy, organized, and inviting environment in the media center.

Takes responsibility for the operation of the media center and supervision of activities in the absence of the media specialist.

Performs additional duties as assigned to fulfill the responsibilities outlined above.

KEY JOB REQUIREMENTS:

A high school diploma or GED is required; an associate's degree is preferred.

A minimum of one (1) year of training in library procedures and/or two (2) years of clerical experience is preferred.

Ability to make recommendations or decisions that typically impact the media center.

One of the following qualifications must be met:

  1. Possess an associate's degree or higher in any field from a GaPSC-accepted accredited institution, or
  2. Have completed two (2) years of college coursework (sixty [60] semester hours) above the remedial level with a grade of "C" or better at a GaPSC-accepted accredited institution, or
  3. Have passed the GACE Paraprofessional Assessment and hold a minimum of a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
Light independent judgment is necessary, with decisions made as needed to ensure the effective operation of the media center.

Regular communication with the Media Specialist and school personnel is required.

Periodic communication with parents regarding materials checked out to students is necessary.

Applies, recommends, and implements technology to enhance the effectiveness of school operations.

NOTE: This is a grade 16, 188-day position that compensates for experience up to a Step 4.
