Police Officer Commissioned Position

The Montana State University Police Department is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Police Officer Commissioned to join our team. As a sworn law enforcement officer, you will be responsible for providing a safe and secure environment for students, employees, and visitors on campus.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct vehicle patrol operations, including safely and legally operating a police vehicle and equipment, detecting and taking enforcement action on observed violations of the law, and conducting traffic accident investigations.
- Conduct DUI investigations and maintain required certifications, detect and deter crime, and apprehend those who violate State, local, and Federal laws as well as University policies.
- Write comprehensive reports that clearly articulate relevant facts and support the elements of the criminal offense, demonstrate proficiency with computer skills, and interview victims, suspects, and witnesses to obtain information necessary to determine facts and circumstances of incidents.
- Preserve crime scenes, collect and photograph evidence, and properly secure evidence maintaining chain of custody, respond to fire and medical emergencies, and provide assistance as required.
- Participate in crime prevention programs, conduct crime and safety awareness presentations, and provide and maintain the ability to provide credible testimony in a court of law.
- Meet peace officer education and certification standards as set forth by the Montana Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification requirements.
- Possess a current Montana POST certification for sworn law enforcement officer or possess a current out-of-state equivalent certification and the ability to obtain Montana POST certification within one year.
- Knowledge and experience with the use of firearms, experience participating in community service programs and/or events, and the ability to communicate effectively with employees and the public in-person and over the phone.
The position requires the ability to work days, nights, weekends, and holidays on a rotational basis, respond immediately to emergency situations 24 hours/7days a week/365 days a year, and work overtime. The position may require exposure to extreme temperature, noise, heights, or hazardous materials, and the ability to qualify and maintain annual certification with various duty weapons.
Physical DemandsThe position requires the ability to pass a Department of Transportation physical, be physically fit and able to perform foot patrol, bike patrol, and respond quickly to emergency situations.
