Position Overview:

The Charge Registered Nurse serves as a pivotal leader within the healthcare team, overseeing departmental functions to guarantee exceptional patient care in a secure and nurturing environment focused on both patients and their families. This role embodies accountability and professionalism, showcasing advanced clinical expertise. The Charge Nurse is an essential support for staff, adeptly recognizing departmental priorities and needs. This position exemplifies professional nursing standards and may influence management decisions regarding optimal resource allocation, patient assignments, staffing, and scheduling. The Charge Nurse's performance aligns with the strategic objectives of the organization and the nursing mission and values.

Key Responsibilities:

The Charge Registered Nurse demonstrates proficiency through the following competencies and actions:

Leadership:

  • Oversees, reviews, assigns, and organizes the work of a minimum of three (3) staff members, including at least one (1) other Registered Nurse.
  • Implements the nursing mission, vision, values, and behaviors in daily operations, understanding departmental needs and establishing priorities.
  • Provides professional guidance and direction to department personnel to ensure effective patient care delivery.
  • Coordinates departmental functions and appropriately delegates tasks, serving as a role model for professional nursing practices.
  • Ensures adherence to organizational policies, state and federal regulations, and accreditation standards.
  • Maintains compliance with the California Nurse Practice Act and the American Nurses Association (ANA) standards.
  • Encourages innovative ideas and collaborates with others throughout the change process.
  • Acts as a resource, mentor, and preceptor for new staff, registry personnel, students, and team members in departmental operations and patient care.
  • Collaborates with management or clinical specialists regarding any significant issues or concerns within the unit.
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory standards and policies.
  • Engages in activities related to patient flow, including admissions and discharges, facilitating interdisciplinary communication.

Nursing Process:

  • Serves as a clinical resource for scope of practice and operational concerns, possessing the necessary experience to support staff and providers.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in scheduling to meet departmental demands and assists with staff breaks.
  • Actively participates in the orientation, precepting, and coaching of staff as required.

Documentation:

  • Conducts audits to ensure documentation accurately reflects comprehensive assessments, including physical and psychosocial evaluations, diagnostic tests, and care plans.

Clinical Outcomes:

  • Participates in and leads various departmental operations, staff competencies, committees, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Possesses knowledge of patient conditions commonly encountered in the department and the necessary care required.
  • Motivates and engages staff in quality improvement efforts related to patient care and workflow.

Workplace Safety:

  • Adjusts staffing levels to ensure quality patient care and a safe working environment for staff.

Patient Care Experience:

  • Models exemplary patient care practices that exceed member expectations.
  • Ensures timely management of patient needs and coordinates transitions across the care continuum.

Team Commitment:

  • Supports a collaborative environment through unit-based teams, identifying staff development needs.
  • Encourages staff to reach their full potential in performance and quality outcomes.

Fiscal Responsibility:

  • Participates in resource management, including assignments, scheduling, and supply management.
