Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Technician to join our team at Brookhaven National Laboratory. As a Mechanical Technician, you will be responsible for performing a wide range of technical tasks in support of our scientific and engineering staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assemble, test, and install components and systems
  • Troubleshoot and repair systems
  • Manufacture prototype parts
  • Work with scientists, engineers, and technical teams to install, maintain, and upgrade mechanical systems
  • Complete periodic training and pass testing on BNL environmental, health, and safety rules
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Technical institute or Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL, or a technical high school certification program and 1 year of relevant work experience
  • 2 years of relevant work experience
  • Ability to work from mechanical drawings, schematics, and verbal instructions
  • Experience working with hand and power tools for assembly and disassembly of equipment
  • Experience with manual mechanical machine shop techniques, including operating lathes, milling machines, and drill presses
  • Knowledge of pipe fitting, tube bending, soldering/brazing, and installation of compression/Swagelok fittings
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Commitment to working safely under strict guidelines
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with magnets, ultra-high vacuum assembly techniques
  • Knowledge of metrology and use of precision inspection tools
  • Experience with mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic actuators
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office products like Outlook, Word, and Excel
Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements
  • Ability to lift more than 50 LBS on a regular basis
  • Ability to work on ladders and scaffolds
  • Ability to qualify as a material handler to operate hoists and perform basic rigging tasks
  • Ability to work in ergonomically challenging spaces
  • Mental sharpness
  • Physical coordination and balance
  • Hear and understand speech
  • Ability to wear proper PPE such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and hearing protection
Other Information

The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level dependent upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills, as well as years of relevant experience.

Drivers license required. Overtime may be required during shutdowns and maintenance periods. BNL will not sponsor a visa for this position.
