Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Medical Interpreter Coordinator to join our team at NYU Langone Hospital - Brooklyn. As a key member of our healthcare team, you will be responsible for providing high-quality interpretation services to patients and staff, ensuring seamless communication and excellent patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide spoken language interpreting services to patients and staff, adhering to the Code of Ethics as put forth by the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC).
  • Schedule, dispatch, and manage spoken language interpreting services, communicating effectively with staff, freelance, and agency interpreters.
  • Educate staff on how to access, contact, and schedule interpreting services, as well as the appropriate use of interpreters and translation services.
  • Provide non-medical, non-clinical translations when necessary, recognizing limitations and deferring to qualified medical translators when indicated.
  • Offer cultural brokering to patients and staff as needed, promoting cultural sensitivity and understanding.
  • Assist with scheduling conflicts and issues, following up with areas and units as necessary.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication and customer service skills, interacting with all levels of health system staff and patients.
  • Respect and maintain confidentiality of patient, physician, staff, and hospital-related information.
  • Stay current on changes in the medical interpreter profession, utilizing health system and community resources for professional development.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or a certificate of completion from an interpreter training program by an accredited institution of no less than 40 hours.
  • Minimum of 2 to 3 years of medical interpreting experience.
  • Good analytical skills to make decisions based on clinical implications, with proficiency in MS Office.
  • Detail-oriented and ability to multi-task, with excellent interpersonal, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Verbal and written fluency in Spanish, Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin), or Arabic required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Preferred certification as a medical interpreter through National Board Certification or Certification Commission for HealthCare Interpreters.
  • Previous experience providing translations of written materials, with basic knowledge of Excel.
