Job Summary:
The Cancer Genetic Counselor - Patient Care Specialist plays a vital role in helping individuals determine their risk for cancer. This position requires a strong understanding of genetics and the ability to provide empathetic and informative counseling to patients and their families.
Key Responsibilities:
- Patient Care: Conduct a full family history intake at every session, order genetic testing, provide a risk assessment, and provide extensive counseling to high-risk patients and their families.
- Patient Education/Counseling: Provide education and counseling to patients about genetic testing, assist in determining if genetic testing is the right decision, and provide emotional support to individuals and their families.
- Customer Service: Ensure that patients' needs are met by providing care or service dependably and consistently, demonstrating empathy and understanding patient concerns, and displaying a positive image in all encounters.
- Data Management: Maintain key and vital statistics with regard to the genetics program, including patient, administrative, and statistical reports.
- Genetic Testing/Clinical Research: Provide clinical expertise in determining which test is best suited for the patient's history/condition, preparing laboratory specimens for internal and external processing, and adhering to hospital infection control and safety policies.
Requirements:
- Master's of Science Degree in Genetics or Genetic Counseling
- American Board of Medical Genetics - Genetic Counseling
