Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Accounting Technician II to join our team at the City of Bend, OR. As a key member of our Finance Department, you will be responsible for handling a high volume of customer inquiries, payment applications, and account follow-up to customers invoiced for Ambulance services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Accurately enter complex payments and adjustment data into the patient accounts from electronic remittance (ERA) and paper Explanation of Benefits (EOB) from insurance companies, patients, and other sources into the practice management system.
  • Reconcile payments received with corresponding invoices or claims to ensure accuracy.
  • Respond to inquiries and requests for information over the phone and in person, which includes receiving payments, taking and transmitting messages, looking up and communicating account balances, and/or performing other related activities.
  • Perform a variety of clerical activities in support of daily operations, which includes filing; copying; faxing; typing standard documents; preparing, sorting, and processing incoming mail and returned mail; entering data; and/or performing other related activities.
  • Perform a variety of cash handling duties including posting, balancing and reconciling daily cash deposits and processing refunds.
  • Research and verify a variety of information related to customer accounts; identifies and resolves discrepancies related to payments and posting. Performs collection activities on delinquent accounts; sets up payment plans with customers; transfers information to collection agencies.
  • Prepare, update, and maintain a variety of financially related correspondence, reports, notices, billings, records, spreadsheets, schedules, website information, and/or files.
  • Provide back-up to disbursement and/or billing processes which may include data entry, insurance verification, insurance denials and claim review.
  • Collaborate with billing specialists, providers, and administrative staff to ensure smooth payment processes.
  • Adhere to all relevant regulations, guidelines, and policies related to billing and payment posting.
  • Comply with safety requirements of the position and actively promotes safe work practices.
  • In an emergency event or an officially declared State of Emergency, responds as directed to ensure the restoration of essential public services, facilities and infrastructure.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.)
  • 4 years of accounting related clerical/administrative and customer service experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
  • Current and valid Driver's license per City policies outlined in the Employee Handbook.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum 1-3 years experience in a medical administrative setting
  • Knowledge of medical accounting principles
  • EMS billing, Medicare and medical insurance procedure codes
  • Previous account review/collection experience, knowledge of collection account principles, practices
  • High volume customer service experience
