Overview:

The proficient Nurse, within a similar clinical environment, operates autonomously and showcases an understanding of all pertinent aspects of a scenario. Delivers both routine and intricate care, with the capability to focus on long-term objectives or strategies. Continues to enhance the ability to manage and adapt to the complexities of clinical nursing. Makes suitable assignments and delegates responsibilities to other healthcare providers as a means to assist in managing the clinical situation.

Key Responsibilities:


• Meets the expectations of the relevant OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.

• In alignment with the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, provides nursing care through the nursing process, which includes assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation for assigned patients.

• Addresses increasingly complex psychological, emotional, cultural, and social needs of patients and families according to their level of practice.

• Administers medications and treatments following the appropriate protocols; monitors for side effects and the effectiveness of prescribed treatments.

• Documents patient history, symptoms, medications, and care provided.

• Assesses educational needs and offers guidance to patients, family members, and/or caregivers; identifies issues and resources.

Standard II: Patient Throughput & Patient Flow Process

• Anticipates and plans for admission, discharge, and transfer needs to facilitate patient flow.

• Utilizes appropriate communication systems and tools to aid the discharge process.

• Guides on tools and techniques for verifying and validating orders to ensure accuracy.

Standard III: Unit Operations

• Plans, directs, and evaluates the overall nursing care and functions within a specific nursing unit during an assigned shift.

• Demonstrates responsible stewardship in the proper use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.

• Assesses departmental staffing requirements; actively participates in resource allocation efforts.

• Educates and trains others on operations, ethics, and regulations within the healthcare industry.

Standard IV: Safe Practice/Quality Care/Regulations

• Integrates patient safety practices and guidelines to foster a safe environment, resulting in positive patient outcomes.

• Demonstrates accountability for nursing research and quality improvement initiatives.

• Provides evidence-based nursing care.

• Effectively communicates patient information across the continuum of care.

• Educates and trains others on operations, ethics, and regulations within the healthcare industry.

• Knowledgeable of federal, state, and local healthcare-related laws and regulations; able to comply with these in healthcare practices and activities.

Medical Equipment

• Describes experience with basic medical equipment utilized in the unit or facility.

• Uses standard diagnostic tools and techniques to resolve common equipment issues.

• Educates patients on the appropriate use of home medical equipment.

• Ensures that all equipment and related supplies are in proper working order prior to use to guarantee patient safety.

• Inspects, troubleshoots, and evaluates incoming equipment.

Medical Order Processing

• Shares experiences with processing medical orders for one or more patient groups or conditions.

• Describes functions and features of the system used to enter, validate, update, and forward medical orders.

• Discusses common errors, their sources, and procedures for correction.

• Explains considerations for entering and following standing orders.

• Differentiates between standing orders and preprinted orders and the considerations for each.

Patient Chart Reading and Interpretation

• Describes experiences in reading and interpreting patient charts for patients under their care.

• Reviews patients' charts for completeness and accuracy; identifies and alerts to mistakes or omissions.

• Recognizes unexpected readings and notifies nursing or medical staff.

• Relates examples of misreadings or misinterpretations and lessons learned.

• Reviews, discusses, and validates their interpretations with others.

Patient Safety

• Shares experiences with ensuring safety for one or more patient groups or settings.

• Explains key features of safety guidelines and procedures for those groups and settings.

• Listens and responds to safety inquiries from patients and family members.

• Recognizes and addresses physiological and psychological signs of problems.

• Describes considerations for patients who may cause harm to themselves versus harm to others.

• Utilizes appropriate systems to document misses and near misses, participating in immediate investigation, analysis, and reporting in real-time.

Qualifications:

Experience

  • 1 year of experience in the relevant nursing specialty preferred.

Education

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing preferred.

Licenses/Certifications/Registrations

  • RN License in the state of employment or compact.
  • BLS required.
