POSITION SUMMARY
As a vital member of the Construction Services Team at Michael Baker International, the Technical Manager will oversee the strategic planning, coordination, and execution of bridge construction initiatives associated with various contracts. This role involves collaboration with engineers, clients, contractors, and field personnel to ensure projects are delivered in alignment with contractual obligations, within specified timelines, and budgetary constraints while prioritizing safety protocols.
The Technical Manager will engage frequently with engineering teams and field staff to address and resolve construction challenges, seeking technical advice in specialized engineering areas and inspections. Additionally, this position requires regular interaction with contractor representatives to organize project inspections and troubleshoot issues, as well as liaising with local government and law enforcement to facilitate construction activities and manage traffic control measures.
This role is predominantly field-based, demanding active participation in all construction phases, which may involve complex traffic management, sensitive political or environmental factors, and significant coordination with property owners, utility services, and governmental entities. Responsibilities include the preparation of comprehensive reports such as correspondence, meeting notes, daily summaries, change orders, and project closure documentation.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervise and manage field personnel effectively.
- Track construction progress and expenditures.
- Draft and manage project-related correspondence.
- Maintain accurate jobsite documentation.
- Conduct and document project meetings thoroughly.
- Assess and recommend acceptance or rejection of project schedules.
- Review contractor payment requests diligently.
- Implement and uphold document control systems.
- Conduct constructability assessments of evolving plans.
- Prepare cost estimates or evaluate third-party estimates.
- Oversee construction staff training and certification compliance.
- Coordinate inspection resources with inspectors.
- Collaborate with other consulting firms as necessary.
- Engage with clients to maintain strong communication.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant government and industry standards.
- Develop and enforce construction management QA/QC Plans.
- Flexibility to work non-standard hours, including occasional nights and weekends.
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
- Minimum of 15 years of experience in construction management and inspection.
- Knowledge of Federal and State construction specifications.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in DC, MD, or VA preferred or the ability to obtain within a year.
- Experience with complex bridge designs preferred (e.g., cable-stayed, suspension, tied arch, steel truss).
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Strong organizational, leadership, and motivational skills.
- Experience in construction observation adhering to industry standards.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for client interactions.
COMPENSATION
The estimated compensation range for this position is $132,324 to $206,676, reflecting a good faith estimate at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be influenced by factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and work location.
