Job Summary
The Wildlife Control Officer plays a crucial role in safeguarding the community by upholding local animal management regulations and state statutes concerning the care, control, and protection of both domestic and wild animals within city boundaries.
Key Responsibilities
1. Address customer inquiries through various communication channels, including phone, email, and face-to-face interactions.
2. Manage and input data into the shelter management system to accurately document animal and owner information.
3. Complete necessary documentation for animal intake (surrenders, strays, etc.) and outcomes (adoptions, returns, etc.).
4. Provide guidance for pet adoptions and assist in retaining pet ownership.
5. Process payments for services, adoptions, and donations, ensuring proper receipt issuance.
6. Maintain comprehensive records of animal incidents, public complaints, adoptions, and other essential documentation. Prepare reports on investigations and administrative matters.
7. Participate in community outreach events, including adoption fairs and educational programs.
8. Conduct tours and provide educational sessions at the shelter and adoption facility.
9. Patrol neighborhoods to capture and transport stray or wild animals to designated facilities.
10. Operate city vehicles in compliance with municipal and state regulations while performing job duties.
11. Respond to reports of lost or stray animals, assist residents with wildlife concerns, and manage encounters with potentially dangerous animals.
12. Safely remove deceased animals from various locations.
13. Investigate reports of aggressive animals and animal bites; enforce regulations by impounding or quarantining animals as necessary.
14. Collect and send rabies specimens to the appropriate health authorities.
15. Utilize two-way radios and in-vehicle computers for communication.
16. Maintain and service equipment and vehicles used in the course of duty.
17. Educate the public and pet owners on relevant animal laws and welfare practices.
18. Enforce local animal control laws through the issuance of warnings or citations and represent the department in municipal court as needed.
19. Investigate cases of suspected animal cruelty or unexplained animal deaths.
20. Ensure cleanliness and proper maintenance of animal enclosures and care areas at the shelter.
21. Provide essential care, including food, water, and shelter, to animals in custody.
22. Monitor and report any signs of illness or injury in animals to supervisors.
23. Perform euthanasia when deemed necessary, following established protocols.
24. Update shelter records and databases to reflect changes in animal status.
25. Carry out additional related duties as assigned.
26. Interact with the public, colleagues, and stakeholders in a professional and respectful manner.
27. Maintain regular attendance and punctuality as required for this role.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma or equivalent.
Must obtain the Texas Department of State Health Services Basic Animal Control certificate within one year of employment.
A euthanasia certification must be acquired within four months of employment.
Successful completion of a Federal/National background check, polygraph, psychological evaluation, and credit check is required. A valid Texas driver's license with a satisfactory driving record is mandatory.
Due to Criminal Justice Information Security (CJIS) regulations, candidates must not have any disqualifying criminal convictions.
Must pass a pre-employment physical examination, drug screening, and vision assessments.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position involves routine exposure to various environmental conditions, including:

Safety equipment will be provided as necessary and must be utilized according to departmental guidelines.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical requirements for this role include the ability to perform medium work, which entails walking, standing, sitting, and lifting. Regular lifting of up to 20 pounds, frequent lifting of up to 40 pounds, and occasional lifting of over 50 pounds is expected. Vision requirements include close and distance vision, color perception, and depth perception.
