Job Summary

As an Animal Services Officer with the City of Grapevine, TX, you will play a vital role in protecting and serving the community by enforcing animal ordinances and state laws. Your primary responsibilities will include providing customer service, animal care, and community education in a professional manner.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Customer Service: Serve the needs of customers through phone calls, electronic communication, and in-person interactions.
  2. Animal Care: Operate and enter information into the shelter database to collect animal and person data correctly. Perform paperwork to complete intake and outcome processes.
  3. Community Education: Provide counseling for adoptions and owner retention of animals. Receive money for fees, adoptions, donations, and provide receipts.
  4. Record Keeping: Maintain records and files on animal bites, citizen complaints, adoptions, and other paperwork as required.
  5. Reporting: Prepare written reports and computer reports on complaints, investigations, and administrative matters.
  6. Community Outreach: Attend offsite events, including adoption events, festivals, and educational offerings. Provide tours and educational opportunities at the Shelter and Adoption Center.
  7. Patrol and Response: Patrol streets and respond to capture wild and/or domestic animals and transport captured animals to the appropriate location.
  8. Vehicle Operations: Operate City vehicle safely and act according to City and State laws while carrying out duties.
  9. Complaint Response: Respond to complaints regarding stray or lost animals, assist citizens with nuisance wildlife, and remove deceased animals from varied locations.
  10. Investigations: Investigate complaints regarding vicious or dangerous animals and animal bites; impound or quarantine offending animals and advise animal owners of applicable laws.
  11. Equipment Maintenance: Maintain equipment and vehicle.
  12. Education and Outreach: Provide education to owners and public on applicable animal laws and animal welfare.
  13. Enforcement: Enforce City animal control ordinances and state laws through the issuance of warnings and/or citations.
  14. Animal Care and Handling: Provide necessary food, water, and shelter to impounded animals. Monitor and report signs of illness or injury in animals to supervisor.
  15. Euthanasia: Perform euthanasia as required.
  16. Record Reconciliation: Reconcile animals and update paperwork in shelter database to reflect changes.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you must have a high school diploma or equivalent plus two years of experience in animal control or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. You must also possess a Texas Department of State Health Services Basic Animal Control certificate of completion within one year of employment and a state-approved euthanasia certificate of completion within four months of employment.

You must pass a Federal/National criminal background check, polygraph, psychological exam, and credit check. You must have a valid Texas driver's license with an acceptable driving record as defined by City policy. Due to Criminal Justice Information Security (CJIS) requirements, you must never have been convicted, put on court-ordered community supervision, or probation for any criminal offense above the grade of Class B misdemeanor or a Class B misdemeanor within the last ten years from the date of the court order.

You must also pass a pre-employment basic physical, drug screen, functional assessment screening (Level 1), Titmus vision screening, Ishihara vision screening, and smell test.

Working Conditions

This role involves routine and frequent exposure to bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, animals/wildlife, vibration, fumes and/or noxious odors, traffic, moving machinery, electrical shock, heights, disease/pathogens, and toxic/caustic chemicals.

Safety equipment is provided as needed per job assignment and must be worn as required by department procedures and good safety practices.

Physical Demands

This role requires the ability to perform medium work that involves walking, standing, sitting, stooping, jumping, stretching, or lifting. The employee frequently is required to stand; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 20 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 40 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds.
