This position presents a remarkable opportunity for a skilled and adaptable musician, performer, and educator to make a significant impact within an innovative and award-winning arts organization dedicated to transforming lives in our local community.

Under the guidance of CATA Program Directors, the Resident Music Faculty is responsible for designing and conducting music and vocal workshops tailored for CATA artists with developmental and intellectual disabilities, autism, and brain injuries. These workshops will take place in CATA studios, special education classrooms, day programs, and partner organizations throughout Berkshire and Columbia counties. Participants will have the chance to engage in singing, rhythm-making, lyric and melody composition, improvisation, and collaborative music-making, with opportunities for more advanced explorations of specific musical styles or techniques.

This role requires a commitment of 32 hours per week, accompanied by benefits, with an expectation of working four days a week from 9 AM to 5 PM. Some additional evening and weekend hours may be necessary with prior notice. The position reports to CATA Program Directors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Program Directors to develop, plan, and deliver engaging group workshop series in music that foster creativity among CATA artists with disabilities, aligning with CATA's strategic objectives. Utilize adaptive and inclusive methods to engage participants across a broad spectrum of abilities, encouraging exploration of various musical styles and the joy of collaborative music creation.
  • As a faculty artist within partner settings, embody CATA's organizational values, demonstrating respect for partner staff and leaders. Maintain open communication with supervisors regarding successes and challenges, and support the development of strong relationships with program partners.
  • Design curricula and assessment tools under supervisory guidance, identifying key learning outcomes through written curriculum and project descriptions. Tailor projects to meet the needs and interests of CATA artists, assist in researching adaptive tools, set clear workshop expectations, and evaluate progress through feedback from supervisors, CATA artists, and program partners.
  • Engage in CATA performances, sharing events, and other activities as a co-leader or in a supportive role, modeling active participation for CATA artists.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development, training sessions, meetings, and faculty retreats, applying insights to enhance teaching practices. Embrace performance-based feedback from supervisors to foster personal growth and improvement.
  • Under the direction of Program Directors, mentor CATA artists with disabilities, supporting their exploration of composition, sound design, and music performance roles. Collaborate with Program Directors to create curricula that prepare CATA artists for leadership roles through co-teaching workshops and expanded sound/music design responsibilities.
  • Perform additional tasks and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Music, Music Education, or a related field, or equivalent life/work experience.
  • A working performing artist with a minimum of three years of teaching experience across diverse settings.
  • Proficiency as a vocalist with an accompanying instrument (piano, guitar, banjo, etc.) is required; multi-instrumental skills and familiarity with various musical techniques, including singing, guitar, and/or percussion, are preferred. Knowledge of accessible instruments and music-making tools is advantageous.
  • Strong time management and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with other artists and within an organizational framework, reporting to supervisors.
  • Capability to adapt and modify learning experiences for individuals of all abilities and ages, demonstrating empathy, sensitivity, and inclusivity to engage a diverse range of participants.
  • Experience in engaging with diverse populations across race, class, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, neurodivergence, and ability. A commitment to cultural competence and inclusion, along with a dedication to ongoing learning in areas such as racial and social justice and disability rights, is essential. Candidates with training in Universal Design for Learning, trauma-informed teaching, and DEI are preferred.
  • Reliable transportation and willingness to travel throughout Berkshire County, MA, and Columbia County, NY, with mileage reimbursement.

CATA Offers:

A comprehensive compensation package, including an annual salary of $45,000 for 32 hours per week, along with excellent benefits such as:
