CATA Visual Arts Music Faculty

The position of Music Education Specialist entails a commitment of 32 hours per week and is accountable to the CATA Program Directors.

This role presents a remarkable opportunity for a skilled and adaptable musician, performer, and educator to make a significant impact within an innovative and award-winning arts organization dedicated to transforming lives in our local community.

Under the guidance of CATA Program Directors, the Music Education Specialist will create and facilitate music and vocal workshops tailored for CATA artists with developmental and intellectual disabilities, autism, and brain injuries. These workshops will take place in CATA studios, special education classrooms, day programs, and partner organizations throughout the region. Participants will have the chance to engage in singing, rhythm-making, lyric composition, improvisation, and collaborative music-making, with potential for deeper exploration of various musical styles.

This role requires a commitment of 32 hours per week, including benefits, with an expectation of working four days a week from 9 AM to 5 PM. Some evening and weekend work may be necessary with prior notice. Reports directly to CATA Program Directors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Program Directors to design, plan, and deliver engaging group workshop series in music that foster creativity among CATA artists with disabilities, aligning with CATA's strategic objectives. Utilize adaptive and inclusive methods to engage participants of varying abilities and encourage exploration of diverse musical styles.
  • As a faculty artist, represent CATA's core values while working alongside partner organizations, demonstrating respect for staff and leaders. Maintain clear communication with supervisors regarding achievements and challenges to strengthen relationships with program partners.
  • Develop educational materials and assessment tools under the supervision of Program Directors, identifying essential learning outcomes and tailoring projects to meet the needs and interests of CATA artists.
  • Participate in CATA performances and events, either as a co-leader or in a supportive role, modeling active engagement for CATA artists.
  • Engage in continuous professional development, including trainings and faculty retreats, applying insights to enhance teaching practices. Embrace constructive feedback from supervisors to drive personal and professional growth.
  • Mentor CATA artists with disabilities, assisting them in exploring composition and sound design. Collaborate with Program Directors to create curricula that empower CATA artists to assume leadership roles.
  • Fulfill additional tasks and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Music, Music Education, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Proven experience as a performing artist with a minimum of three years of teaching in diverse environments.
  • Strong proficiency as a vocalist with an accompanying instrument (e.g., piano, guitar) is required; familiarity with multiple instruments and accessible music-making tools is preferred.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with other artists and adhere to organizational structures.
  • Capacity to adapt learning experiences for individuals of all abilities and ages, fostering an inclusive environment.
  • Commitment to engaging with diverse populations and promoting inclusion, with a focus on social justice and disability rights.
  • Reliable transportation and willingness to travel within the designated regions.
