Job Summary

The Laboratory Animal Sciences Technician III will perform a variety of tasks following established techniques and procedures. This role will assist in study execution, collect samples from and administer agents to research animals as IACUC approved studies require.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in study execution, including collecting samples from and administering agents to research animals
  • Exercise judgment in the collection and processing of samples such as blood, serum, plasma, tissue, and urine
  • Work with a variety of animal species and perform complex tasks involving both in-vivo and in-vitro procedures
  • Document laboratory work to acceptable standards and maintain laboratory/medical equipment and supplies in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), protocols, and regulations
  • Assist in administrative functions of study execution, including labeling collection tubes, transporting supplies, quality control review of data, coordinating sample shipment, and acting as shift or study lead
  • Perform activities as lead, including scheduling team work assignments and acting as primary point of contact for the study director for a particular shift
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent and 3-5 years of related experience in a research, commercial, or hospital laboratory, or an associate's degree and 2-4 years of experience in a research, commercial, or hospital laboratory, with a minimum of 3 years of animal experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Preferred computer proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Internet Explorer, Outlook, and the ability to learn department-specific computer systems as needed
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and other heavy equipment, push, bend, stoop, climb, and work in extreme temperatures and humidity
  • Ability to wear a respirator and protective clothing or equipment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field and leadership experience
  • ALAT and LAT certification
  • Incumbent encouraged to sit for ALAT and/or LAT within 12 months as a level 2 technician
Physical Requirements

The work is performed in a wet laboratory environment. The incumbent will operate standard laboratory equipment and will frequently stand, walk, sit, perform lab- and desk-based computer tasks, perform laboratory techniques requiring grasping/pipetting/hand dexterity, perform repetitive motions, and occasionally lift objects that weigh up to 50 pounds.

The incumbent will wear personal protective equipment, which may include a respirator. The work may be performed in close proximity to an environment containing research animals and may require working with or being in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious agents are present, which may require vaccinations.
