Cook NA-06

This position is located at Fort Hamilton Bowling Center in Fort Hamilton, NY. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 6 months of work experience directly related to food preparation and cooking. The selected individual will be responsible for preparing and cooking a variety of menu items, working alone or with a higher-grade cook or supervisor. The position requires the ability to communicate effectively in English and to follow written and verbal instructions.

• Prepares and cooks a variety of menu items.
• Brings prepared foods from the preparation area to refrigerators or serving areas.
• Picks up items needed for menu preparation and rotates food inventories as appropriate.
• Operates kitchen equipment designed to mix and cook food items.
• Cleans and maintains power kitchen equipment.
• Assists in training lower-grade cooks or kitchen help and provides advice on how to improve their work methods.

• Must possess a minimum of 6 months of work experience directly related to the duties described above.
• Be able to communicate (verbal and written) in English.

• Basic knowledge of food preparation principles and practical understanding of the physical processes that occur in cooking.
• Knowledge of proper cooking temperatures and preparation methods for a variety of foods.
• Ability to schedule and coordinate preparation of a number of different foods in order to ensure that they are ready for service at the appropriate mealtime.
• Knowledge of foodborne illnesses, food safety, and proper storage methods for hot and cold food items in order to prevent loss or illness due to spoilage.

This is a federal wage schedule (FWS) position. All FWS employees are entitled to overtime work for work in excess of 8 hours in a day or in excess of 40 hours in the administrative workweek, whichever provides the greater benefit to the employee.
