Job Summary

We are looking for a dedicated professional to join our team as a Safety and Health Specialist. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and promoting the health and safety of our federal government client's employees.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret environmental health data to identify potential hazards and risks.
  • Issue hot work permits and confined space entry permits to ensure safe working conditions.
  • Update and maintain SDS records to ensure accurate and up-to-date information.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of equipment-specific energy control procedures to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Provide technical consultation services to review projects, documents, plans, policies, procedures, guidelines, and handbooks.
  • Develop and implement various policies, plans, procedures, and guidelines to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct exposure monitoring to occupational stressors such as noise, dust, airborne chemicals, and non-ionizing radiation.
  • Conduct powered industrial truck (PIT) operator competency assessments and maintain a spreadsheet of all certified PIT operators.
  • Using CORITY database to input injury, illness, and near miss information.
  • Assist the customer with special projects as requested, such as EHS training needs, preparation of EMS programs, various audits, ergonomic assessments of workstations, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) assessments, Machine Guarding Assessments.
  • Assist EMS Management Representative with EMS Internal Audits.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining equipment specific energy control procedures for Control of Hazardous Energy Program (Lockout/tagout) upon request.
  • Conduct safety, health, environmental, and fire prevention inspections of production and non-production areas.
  • Monitor overall compliance with OSHA Regulation 29 CFR 1910, and Environmental Management System Policies and Procedures.
  • Conduct daily visits to various production areas to monitor general EHS items such as, the use of personal protective clothing and equipment, and report on the conditions of life safety and fire protection equipment.
  • Notify supervisor immediately of potential risks, when unsafe situations are determined to be imminent or serious based on the investigations.
  • Provide written monthly inspections (annual and semi-annual safety inspections) reports with a summary of all violations observed, photos, recommended corrective actions and deadlines for correction.
  • May be required to submit work request(s) and/or service requests to prioritize repairs as needed to expedite work.
  • Provide quality reports on inspections of assigned areas and needed repairs.
  • Investigate and document Incident Report/Accident Investigations immediately upon notification.
  • Respond to and investigate reports of employee injury/illness, near misses, and complaints related to EHS concerns such as unusual odors, chemical spills, or improper configuration of machinery.
  • Maintain spreadsheets of work-related injuries, illnesses, near misses and other environmental health concerns such as spills.
  • Make recommendations to appropriate staff on jobs that should be reviewed using OSHA's Job Hazard Analysis Guide or guide recommended by the customer and complete Job Safety Analysis.
  • Provide written inspection summary for the evening shift, using the Activity Log, listing all violations observed, photos, recommended corrective actions and deadlines for correction.
  • Assist with inventory of supplies and equipment to maintain adequate inventory and to ensure continuity of services.
  • Maintain a document filing system (electronic and paper) and perform other clerical functions.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, engineering, environmental science, industrial hygiene, safety, occupational health, or other science-related field.
  • Minimum of 1 to 2 years of experience in the environmental or health and safety industry.
  • Areas of technical specialization must include all areas of Environmental Management, Safety, Industrial Hygiene, and Occupational Health.
  • Successfully pass a law enforcement and financial background check for the purpose of obtaining a U.S. Government Security Clearance (Public Trust).
  • Must complete annual HAZWOPER training as specified by 29 CFR 1010.120.
  • Must be flexible and willing to cover other shifts due to absences.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a solid contributor in a team environment.
  • Capable of multi-tasking and changing direction depending on workload.
Working Environment and Conditions

This job operates in a professional office environment and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.

This position is primarily indoors, consistent with a standard office position and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. The incumbent is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear. The workload may require the incumbent to sit for extended periods of time. The incumbent must be able to read, do simple math calculations, and withstand moderate amounts of stress.

The incumbent must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
