**Job Summary:**

We are seeking a highly qualified Academic Instructor to join our team at the University of Minnesota. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching English Composition and ACT Prep & Career Exploration courses to high school students as part of our TRIO Upward Bound program.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teaching and Curriculum Development: Develop and deliver engaging lesson plans for English Composition and ACT Prep & Career Exploration courses, ensuring alignment with program objectives and academic standards.
  • Classroom Instruction: Teach one day a week at the University of Minnesota, utilizing effective instructional strategies to promote student learning and academic success.
  • Student Support and Evaluation: Monitor student attendance, document progress, and complete evaluations as required by the program.
  • Program Collaboration: Work closely with program staff to support program objectives, attend staff meetings, and participate in professional development opportunities.
  • Supervision and Mentorship: Supervise one undergraduate teaching assistant, providing guidance and support to ensure successful program implementation.

Requirements:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree required.
  • Experience: Direct classroom instruction experience, with a focus on working with diverse, multicultural/multilingual, and urban high school students.
  • Qualifications: Classroom teaching and management experience, ability to pass a criminal background check, and availability for the duration of the Minneapolis Public School year calendar.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with ACT Test Preparation: Experience delivering ACT test preparation and/or general test preparation.
  • English Teaching Experience: Experience teaching English, including essay writing, sentence structure, and grammar mechanics, as well as creative writing.
  • Experience with English Language Learners: Experience working with English Language Learners (ELLs).
  • Experience with Low-Income and First-Generation Students: Experience working with low-income and/or students who will be the first in their family to attend college.
  • Curriculum Development and Evaluation: Experience developing and evaluating curriculum, as well as evaluating student learning and content retention.
  • Classroom Management and Supervision: Strong classroom management skills and experience supervising teaching assistants.
