Position Summary - District Engineer
Provide comprehensive project management support and lead capital initiatives associated with aggregate processing facilities within Martin Marietta's Midwest Region of the Central Division. Key responsibilities encompass overseeing project design, estimation, and field construction, along with various enhancements to aggregate plants, new installations, process improvement projects, and other construction management endeavors in the aggregates sector, which includes surface quarries, underground mines, and sand & gravel facilities. This role requires the ability to safely and effectively manage multiple projects concurrently, communicate variances to approved budgets, and regularly track project completion while maintaining focus on the overall direction of projects within the District.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with Operations Services, Operational Excellence, and Operations teams on critical project success factors and business processes; a strong customer service orientation is essential.
- Oversee District-wide capital projects, non-capital initiatives, and Operational Excellence programs.
- Continuously monitor and evaluate progress towards operational goals.
- Communicate and coordinate with operations managers, senior management, and corporate leaders regarding project status.
- Establish and nurture positive relationships with existing and prospective general contractors and subcontractors, aiming to enhance the pool of contractors available for bidding.
- Analyze the impact of various mechanical enhancements on aggregate operations.
- Proficiency in AggFlow (Aggregate Plant Simulation program) and AutoCAD software for plant design is required; familiarity with MS Project or similar Gantt-chart software is preferred.
- Ensure adherence to all relevant state and federal laws/regulations and company policies regarding safety, environmental standards, EEO/AAP, and more.
- Coordinate raw material requirements with relevant personnel both internally and externally.
- Work closely with Procurement to ensure the availability of suitable vendors and suppliers for projects.
- Respond promptly and effectively to emerging issues.
- Develop project scope, budgets, initial concepts, and bid documents related to capital construction projects.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Solid project management process optimization, financial, and analytical skills; experience in project budget and schedule oversight.

- Knowledge of material handling systems, including the installation and start-up of conveyors, screens, crushers, pumps, and material washing systems.
- Innovative and knowledgeable in aggregate plant processing, capable of assessing and proposing various process improvements.
- Familiarity with plant automation and a basic understanding of medium-voltage electrical equipment, layout, and operations is preferred.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings and oversee steel fabrication and erection.
- Proficient in Microsoft Suite and capable of learning new internal programs and systems as necessary.
- Ability to effectively communicate and manage project-related needs with cross-functional team members throughout project life cycles.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in mining, civil, construction, or mechanical engineering; or equivalent experience is required; a PE license is a plus.
- 2+ years of experience in aggregates processing, bulk material handling, construction management, or project management is preferred.
- Willingness to travel up to 50% of the time to meet job requirements.
- Strong knowledge of AutoCAD is essential.
- Experience in successfully executing capital construction projects in underground mining environments is highly desirable.

Work Environment
This position operates frequently in a maintenance and operations environment across both underground and surface locations. The role routinely utilizes standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Physical requirements include the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds from ground to waist, visual acuity, speech and hearing, hand and eye coordination, manual dexterity, repetitive motion, standing, sitting (must be able to sit for extended periods of time up to 8 hours), walking, climbing stairs, bending and stooping, and the ability to drive.
