About the Role

sweetgreen is seeking an experienced Assistant General Counsel, Labor and Employment to join our Legal Team. As a key member of our team, you will provide strategic counsel on labor and employment law matters, including wage and hour compliance, predictive scheduling, payroll, benefits, hiring, performance management, internal investigations, leaves of absence, discipline, terminations, and employee classification.

You will monitor federal, state, and local legislation, regulations, and case law on employment-related matters pertinent to sweetgreen, communicate updates and recommendations as needed, and assist the People Team in developing and implementing policies, procedures, and training programs to drive compliance with labor and employment laws.

As a trusted legal advisor, you will partner with members of our Legal, People, Operations, Risk & Safety, and Executive teams to provide advice, counsel, and support on a broad range of labor and employment law and litigation matters. To be successful in this role, you must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, be able to simplify legal concepts into appropriately risk-adjusted, business-oriented advice, and balance legal risk with business objectives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide proactive and strategic counsel on labor and employment law matters under federal and state laws where sweetgreen operates.
  • Monitor federal, state, and local legislation, regulations, and case law on employment-related matters pertinent to sweetgreen.
  • Assist the People Team in developing and implementing policies, procedures, and training programs to drive compliance with labor and employment laws.
  • Partner with members of our Legal, People, Operations, Risk & Safety, and Executive teams to provide advice, counsel, and support on labor and employment law and litigation matters.
  • Manage all litigation matters for sweetgreen, including hiring and overseeing outside counsel, developing litigation strategy, reviewing all pleadings and other filings, and managing litigation budgets.
Requirements
  • 8+ years of related labor and employment law and general litigation experience.
  • Must have law firm and in-house experience.
  • Retail or hospitality experience preferred.
  • Experience in a fast-paced and dynamic organization preferred.
  • Member in good standing of the state of California or another bar association with the ability to register as in-house counsel in California.
