We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Assistant Managing Attorney to join our team at The Legal Aid Society in New York City. This critical role involves overseeing the daily operations of the Managing Attorney's Office, ensuring the smooth administration of the Criminal Appeals Bureau, and providing exceptional support to staff and clients.

About the Role:

This position requires a high level of administrative and organizational expertise, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to motivate and manage non-attorney staff. You will work closely with the Managing Attorney to develop and implement strategies to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Bureau's operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and train MAO paralegal staff to ensure they have the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their duties effectively
  • Review and revise motions and correspondence prepared by paralegals to ensure accuracy and quality
  • Liaise with court personnel to obtain case assignments, court records, and filing commitments and deadlines
  • Provide assistance to CAB attorneys with procedural problems and handle telephone inquiries from clients and their families
  • Use discretion and sound judgment to troubleshoot problems and resolve non-routine matters
  • Engage in strategic planning to help handle cases efficiently and effectively

Qualifications:

  • Admitted to practice in New York State or ability to waive in from another jurisdiction
  • At least five years' experience practicing law preferred
  • Knowledge of criminal law and New York State appellate procedure preferred
  • Excellent administrative and organizational abilities
  • Excellent communication and writing skills
  • An aptitude for motivating, training, and managing non-attorney staff

Salary and Benefits:

  • A competitive salary range of $130,000 - $135,200
