YMCA Camp Classen is thrilled to announce an opening for a Nature Education Facilitator.

About the Camp

Located in the stunning Arbuckle Mountains of southern Oklahoma, YMCA Camp Classen is dedicated to fostering a love for the outdoors and youth development. Our expansive 2200-acre facility is an ideal backdrop for outdoor exploration, featuring lakes, waterfalls, and diverse ecosystems that enrich the experiences of both students and staff.

Role Responsibilities

As a Nature Education Facilitator, you will have the opportunity to mentor 5th and 6th-grade students from Oklahoma and North Texas. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading engaging exploratory hikes
  • Instructing wilderness survival skills
  • Facilitating hands-on outdoor learning activities such as primitive fire making, aquatic ecosystems, team-building exercises, and more.
Through these activities, you will play a crucial role in enhancing students' educational experiences and nurturing their appreciation for nature.

Employment Seasons
  • Fall season typically runs from late August to mid-December
  • Spring season generally spans from February to the end of May
  • Summer positions are also available
Compensation and Benefits
  • Weekly pay starting at $600.00, depending on experience, with additional compensation for weekend work
  • Bi-weekly payment schedule aligned with YMCA of Greater OKC
  • Provision of staff uniforms

Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Passion for teaching and experience with elementary or middle school youth
  • Strong judgment, adaptability, and ability to work independently
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
  • Ability to thrive in a small, rural community
  • Experience leading outdoor activities and hikes
  • Ability to connect positively with individuals and groups
  • Willingness to undertake various tasks to support the program
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions
Preferred Qualifications
  • Valid Driver's License with a clean record
  • Lifeguard certification or willingness to obtain
  • Kayaking or Stand-Up Paddleboarding certification or willingness to obtain
  • Rock climbing/Belay certification or willingness to obtain
  • CPR & First Aid certification or willingness to obtain
  • Experience with team-building programs
  • Understanding of basic environmental education concepts
  • Degree or relevant experience in Education, Recreation, or related fields
