Position Overview:
The Librarian for Adult Services, under the guidance of Central Adult Services, collaborates with the adult services team to provide essential library functions focused on serving adult patrons.
This role necessitates a high level of professional expertise and discernment, encompassing reference and reader's advisory services, collection management, and programming for individuals and groups.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Deliver reference assistance and reader's advisory for patrons of all ages utilizing both print and digital resources.
2. Develop and curate adult collections within the branch.
3. Design, implement, and assess suitable programs for adult audiences.
4. Engage with local organizations, attend community meetings, and participate in public affairs to promote the services, collections, and programs of Brooklyn Public Library.
5. Serve on committees as required.
6. Interpret and enforce BPL policies.
7. Execute additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution; Public Librarian's Professional Certificate issued by the State of New York is mandatory.
- Proficient knowledge of adult literature, relevant websites, and programming initiatives.
- Proven respect and sensitivity towards the diverse cultures represented in the community.
- Familiarity with the library's electronic reference tools, including the Internet and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Exceptional customer service abilities.
- Capacity to manage multiple competing priorities and tasks in a dynamic, high-volume setting.
- General experience engaging with the public and diverse communities.
- Understanding of current and emerging library technologies, services, and programming trends for adults, along with urban public library challenges.
- Knowledge of the Internet, electronic databases, social media, and basic computer applications.
- Bilingual capabilities are highly desirable.
- Candidates must demonstrate flexibility, adaptability to change, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Availability to work evenings and weekends as required.
This position is part of a union, represented by District Council 37. The salary for this role is $68,176.
