Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Transportation Operator I to join our team at the Virginia Department of Transportation. As a key member of our highway maintenance crew, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient movement of traffic on our roads.

Key Responsibilities
  • Flag traffic and assist in setting up work zones to maintain a safe working environment
  • Perform manual labor on roadway maintenance work crews, including heavy lifting and standing for extended periods
  • Operate light and medium equipment used for highway maintenance and repair, including pick-ups and one-ton trucks
  • Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on vehicles and equipment
  • Work outside normal hours on nights, weekends, and holidays during emergency operations
Requirements
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor and work in diverse conditions, including exposure to weather outdoors in all seasons
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate light and medium equipment
  • Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures
  • Ability to read, follow oral and written instructions, and work independently
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in roadway maintenance and flagging operations
  • Experience in equipment operation and performing preventive maintenance
  • Knowledge of maintenance, construction, or related field
  • Experience with emergency operations, including snow removal, storms, and accident clean-up
